Summary

These positions are located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Dale Bumpers National Rice Research Center, located in Stuttgart, AR.

Responsibilities

The Dale Bumpers National Rice Research Center conducts rice genetics based research with the goal of developing new rice varieties and methods of breeding that will increase economic value and promote sustainable use of of natural resources for USA rice production. This position will directly support rice breeding and germplasm enhancement efforts.

Major Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Assisting in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties, in a laboratory, field, or greenhouse environment, common to the assigned area of work.
Collecting, preparing, evaluating, and verifying samples and supporting records.
Maintaining inventory of chemicals, prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse, and safely disposes of waste material (both chemical and biological).

Performing routine and recurring techniques and studies using a variety of specialized equipment.
Using personal computers and software packages in the data collection, analysis, and presentation processes.

For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting with the collection of plant or environmental samples in a laboratory, field or greenhouse environment; preparing samples for research purposes; and compiling and interpreting research results and data using standard equipment.

OR

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study above the high school level leading to a bachelors degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics.

At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related. Related courses include plant science, agronomy, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, or environmental science.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.

At the GS-06:

Qualifying experience for GS-6 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-5 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience with the collection of plant or environmental samples in a laboratory, field or greenhouse environment; preparing samples for research purposes; compiling and interpreting research results and data; and preparing research analysis and presentation processes using standard equipment.

OR

Education: One full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees include plant science, agronomy, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, or environmental science.

OR

A combination of education and experience as described above.
