LOCATION

Based out of Astoria, Oregon. Work to be conducted primarily in tributaries of the Lower Columbia River.

DURATION

We are hiring 2 full time, seasonal positions starting September 1, 2024 - November 30, 2024.

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

As a Biological Science Assistant - Spawning Ground Surveyor, you will survey selected Oregon coastal streams to count naturally spawning salmon. Data are distributed to Ocean Salmon Management, Regional and Fish Division staff for use in managing coastal salmon stocks. General project activities include:

  • Conduct spawning ground surveys by locating, driving to and walking or boating selected stream reaches to count spawning salmonids and redds.

  • Collect biological information from dead salmonids including; length, gender, species, fin clip/tag status, scale samples, and fish snouts.

Employees work in crews and are expected to maintain a professional working relationship with their partner(s). Employees are also expected to effectively communicate with ODFW, other government agencies, private landowners, and members of the public.

These positions require a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day including most weekends and some night work. These positions are physically demanding. Employees will frequently be working independently under adverse weather conditions in semi-remote areas.

REQUESTED SKILLS:

Minimum qualifications are not established for these positions; however we are seeking applicants with the following related skills and experience (e.g., experience identifying adult salmonids, operating boats in rivers, conducting stream surveys, sampling fish, communicating with members of the public, and keeping neat and precise field data) and who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences will be given preference for interviews.

REQUIREMENTS

Criminal Records/DMV Check: Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check.

Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible.

You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.

Note: Within three days of hire, applicants will be required to complete the U.S.
