SUMMARY

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as a Biological Safety and Compliance Lab Manager in the research industry. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the safety and compliance protocols in our laboratory and ensuring that all research activities adhere to regulatory standards.

As the Biological Safety and Compliance Lab Manager, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe laboratory environment by implementing and enforcing safety procedures. You will develop and manage training programs to educate staff on proper handling of biological materials and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Additionally, you will be responsible for reviewing and updating standard operating procedures to ensure they align with current safety guidelines.

This position requires strong leadership skills, as you will be responsible for coordinating with other lab managers and research staff to ensure seamless operation of safety protocols. You will conduct regular audits and inspections to identify potential hazards or areas for improvement. In the event of an incident, you will lead investigations to determine the root cause and implement corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES other duties as assigned...

  • Oversee and enforce safety policies and procedures in the laboratory.

  • Develop and implement training programs on biological safety protocols.

  • Conduct audits and inspections to evaluate compliance with safety guidelines.

  • Collaborate with other lab managers and research staff to ensure consistent safety practices.

  • Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.

  • Review and update standard operating procedures to align with current safety regulations.

  • Stay up to date with industry advancements and recommend improvements to enhance safety measures.

JOB DUTIES

  • Is sole point of contact between principal investigator and all relevant biological safety and industrial hygiene entities at both the VA and OHSU.

  • Provides consultation to principal investigator on IBC, IACUC, and rDNA submissions and audits/inspections.

  • Submits IBC, PPQ, rDNA documents to academic review committees in a timely manner for all proposed work and for continuing projects.

  • Writes all biological safety and chemical hygiene SOPs.

  • Makes recommendations to principal investigators and writes compliance statements regarding the design of research protocols.

  • Reviews grant applications and writes portions that relate to biological safety and IACUC submissions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in a biological science or related field

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a biological laboratory, with a focus on safety and compliance

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to biological safety in research environments

  • Strong leadership and management skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Proficient in implementing and enforcing safety procedures.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.

  • Attention to detail and strong analytical skills.

LOCATION and ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • Primary job location is located on the VA Portland Health Care System campus
