OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION:

The Billing Specialist II will be responsible for obtaining and recording accurate patient information to submit on medical claims and appeals. They will facilitate phone calls (including peer-to-peer appeal level calls) between patients, physicians, and their insurance to prove medical necessity of Biodesix testing. They will review and submit appeals to both government and commercial insurance plans on behalf of patients. The Billing Specialist II will evaluate health plan correspondence and properly assign and manage case flow through the billing process. They will work closely with Customer Support Patient Advocates and Billing Team to ensure accurate information is recorded and billing concerns are addressed. The Billing Specialist II will be responsible for escalated calls and will provide support to Sales Team as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Learn billing software and process flows

  • Review and submission of appeals to government and commercial health plans

  • Facilitate productive peer-to-peer calls to insurance plans

  • Adhere to process flows and Standard Operating Procedures

  • Accurate recording of patient data and communications

  • Answer patient billing questions and concerns

  • Work collaboratively with internal departments

COMPETENCY OR POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong communication skills- both oral and written (over the phone and in-person)

  • Ability to adhere to Standard Operating Procedures and process flows

  • Computational and basic math skills

  • Patient-centric focus

  • Organized with attention to detail

  • Ability to adapt to emerging situations and respond with a sense of urgency

  • Handle confidential financial and personal information appropriately

  • Communicate and coordinate with internal departments

  • Bi-lingual preferred

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Undergraduate degree preferred

  • Experience in Finance or cash collections preferred

  • Medical/Laboratory Billing Experience preferred

REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:

This role shall comply, at a minimum, with the responsibilities outlined in:

  • CLIA: Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Requirements, Title 42 Code of Federal Regulations Part 493
  • CAP: College of American Pathologists (CAP): All Common, General, Chemistry, Director Responsibility and Authority and Molecular Pathology checklists
  • NYS CLEP: New York State Department of Health, Clinical Laboratory Evaluation Program (CLEP), New York State Public Health Law, Article 5 Title 5
  • ISO: International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 13485, Quality Management Systems, Requirements for Regulatory Purposes, 2016
  • All other applicable state and regulatory governing authorities including but not limited to: CA, PA, RI, MD
