Highly- specialized clinical diagnostic laboratory, located on the campus of Hudson Alpha Biotechnology Institute in Huntsville, is hiring a Full- Time, Temporary (possibly temp-to-hire) Billing Medical Records Specialist.

Pay rate: $13.50/ hour

Hours: Monday- Friday 8-5

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Appropriately and accurately pulls records for patient care, quality review, and audits in a timely manner.

  • Complying Federal and 3rd party payor requests for medical records in a timely manner.

  • Observe confidentiality and safeguards all patient related information.

  • Responsible for coordinating the release of medical information to insurance companies, lawyers, state, and federal agencies.

  • Responsible for processing of subpoenas and court orders, at the direction of the Billing Director.

  • Provide excellent customer service while meeting deadlines.

  • Maintain a good working relationship within the department, clients, insurance carriers, and other departments.

  • Report discrepancies related to results, requisitions, and documentation obtained from the client.

  • Ensure completion and recording of documentation.

  • Meet all audit requests within the allotted time frame allowed.

  • Communicate with private practice, facility, and nursing home clients as it relates to medical records needs.

  • Meet daily and monthly departmental productivity goals set forth by management to ensure the company is achieving its financial goals.

  • Notify management of trends identified as needed and at month-end.

  • Responsible for protection, security, and proper handling of all PHI.

  • Proactively communicate and escalate billing issues to billing management

  • Assist with complex special projects and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/ Experience:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

  • Medical terminology knowledge preferred.

  • Basic computer knowledge.

  • Previous hospital experience preferred.

  • Familiarity with HIPAA privacy requirements.


  • Knowledge of health information management services.

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to determine appropriate course of action in more complex situations.

  • Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude.

  • Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of all medical, financial, and legal information.

  • Ability to complete work assignments accurately and in a timely manner.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner.

  • Proficient in the use of computers and common office equipment.

  • Must be energetic, dependable with good attendance and have excellent customer service skills.

  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Outlook as well as the ability to learn new applications quickly.

  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy and time management.

  • Proven problem solving skills, along with an ability to quickly comprehend and analyze data.

  • Duties and responsibilities other than those listed may be included as needed within the work group or the company as a whole.

What your background will be: * High school diploma or equivalent; some college preferred and 2+ years applicable experience. * Working knowledge of medical insurance/medical terminology; insurance cards and major medical benefits; insurance rules and contracts. * Computer proficient to include web browser/internet search, MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point capabilities. Technical competence includes the ability to learn new software and systems.
