Position Description:

CHRIS 180 Migrant Wellness Program provides 24-hour care for unaccompanied children (UC) under the care of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) who are placed in residential care as they prepare for sponsorship. The program provides stabilization, behavioral support, comprehensive case management, educational services, daily living skills acquisition, recreational and therapeutic activities, and coordination of care. The Migrant Wellness Program provides a family-involved, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approach to care within residential communities throughout the Atlanta area.

The Teacher Assistant is primarily responsible for assisting the classroom Teacher in the planning, organizing, and implementation of the instructional program in a preschool, elementary, or secondary learning environment for youth who recently migrated to the United States and are primarily native Spanish speakers. This individual must function in a manner that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. This position is expected to function effectively with moderate supervision while following the guidelines given on procedures, along with the agency, federal, and state regulatory requirements.

Role and Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist in the planning, preparation, and delivery of lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.

  • Assist with delivering lesson plans, tests, and educational assessments in accordance with established procedures.

  • Assist with the instruction and monitoring of students in learning materials and equipment.

  • Effectively use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.

  • Effectively manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures.

  • Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the program

  • Provide students with the appropriate assistance and feedback on classroom assignments.

  • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use the information to adjust teaching strategies.

  • Maintain accurate and complete records of student's progress and development.

  • Update all necessary records accurately and completely in alignment with ORR requirements.

  • Participate in school activities, staff, and treatment team meetings.

  • Supervise children during field trips and in the classroom.

  • Communicate necessary information regularly to Case Manager(s), Clinician, house parents, and the assigned supervisor regarding student progress, concerns, or needs.

  • Serve as backup to the teacher and provide instruction to students as needed.

  • Assist the teacher with creating lesson plans and classroom curriculum.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Performance and Conduct:

  • Maintain confidentiality of client information.

  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries.

  • Works on other duties, tasks, and projects as assigned.

  • Ensures agency compliance with National Council on Accreditation and other mandatory regulations/standards.

  • Follow mandated reporting requirements of the GA Code.

  • Support and maintain an environment of emotional and physical safety for youth, staff, and other stakeholders.

Demonstrate Customer Service:

  • Promote a positive image of CHRIS 180 programs at all times.

  • Work as a contributing and collaborative team member.

  • Respond to client and peer needs in a timely fashion.

  • Answer telephone calls and emails accordingly.

  • Respond to requests for information from stakeholders in a timely fashion.

  • Work with sponsors, education professionals, court officials, and other stakeholders and a helpful and professional manner.

Maintain Personal Information and Training:

  • Attend and participate in staff meetings as scheduled.

  • Attend and participate in required training as scheduled.

  • Maintain required certifications.

  • Review, understand, and be responsible for program policies.

  • Provide documents in a timely fashion to Human Resources (HR).

  • Report changes in status to HR as required by policy.

Qualification/Competencies

  • Bachelors level degree in Education from an accredited college, or some college coursework in Educational Instruction preferred.

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, required.

  • Prior work experience teaching ELL/ESL is preferred; prior experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations, is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated cross-cultural sensitivity, preferred.

  • Must possess an ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in Spanish and English with strong interpersonal skills.

  • Must be able to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

  • Must be able to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.

  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic, and ability backgrounds.

  • Excellent attention to detail and highly organized.

  • Computer and typing skills are sufficient to perform essential job functions.

  • Occasionally required to stand, walk, or sit; use finger dexterity, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • Occasionally required to move or lift items up to 25 pounds in weight. Must pass a criminal history screen, including state and local child protection agency registries.

  • Possess a valid drivers license.

Salary: $48,000.00/annually

Schedule:

This is a full-time position and typically works Monday Friday 8:00 am 5:00 pm but requires flexibility.
