Bilingual Liaison ESUSD

Basic Function:Under direction of the Principal, assist school staff in providing written and oral communication to students and families who do not speak English. Translate and assist in preparation of written material.

Interpret oral communication by telephone, in person, at conferences, meetings and school events. Develop a school climate that fosters a positive relationship with the local Hispanic Community.

Duties:Translate written materials and interpret oral presentations and communications. Interpret for non-English speaking students and parents as needed for communication with staff.

Assure student and family understanding of school and classroom rules and procedures, assist students and families by answering questions, providing examples, emotional support, friendly attitude and general guidance. Periodic check-ins with English Language Learner students and their families to clarify questions or concerns.

Schedule and meet with parents and staff to support cross-cultural communication.

Translate All-Calls and written communication from school to home.

Translate documents and paperwork from home to school.

Attend and interpret schoolwide events such as Back to School Night and Awards Assemblies.

Attend and interpret for scheduled District-Level English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) meetings as assigned.

Attend and serve as interpreter for Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings, Student Study Team (SST) meetings, Parent Teacher conferences and telephone calls, as assigned as needed.

Knowledge and Abilities:Knowledge Of:Correct oral and written usage of English and designated second language.Child guidance principles and practices.Safe school practices.Correct English and designated second language grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.Academic vocabulary in English and designated second language.Operation of standard office and classroom equipment.Interpersonal skills using tack, patience and courtesy.Basic record keeping.

Ability To:Read, write, translate and interpret English and a designated second language.Understand and follow oral and written instructions.Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.Maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.Communicate effectively orally and in writing.Operate standard office and classroom equipment.Observe health and safety regulations.Maintain records and files.

Education and Experience:Certification or 24 units in translation and interpretation in educational settings preferred.2 years of experience with translation and interpretation in an educational setting preferred.

Environment:School Site and classroom environment K-12th grades.

Physical Demands:Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment.Sit or stand for extended periods of time.Bend at the waist, kneel, sit our crouch to communicate with students.Hear, speak and read to exchange information.

Salary Schedule: Classified Hourly Column VII
