About the Unaccompanied Childrens Shelter

The Unaccompanied Childrens Shelter is home to adolescent boys and girls through the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR). This program provides a safe setting for children during their first days in America until a permanent setting can be established for them.

About the Bilingual Instructional Assistant Position

The Bilingual Instructional Assistant for the Unaccompanied Childrens (UC) Shelter assists students individually, or in small groups, in meeting course expectations and improving academic and vocational skills. This position has close interaction with staff and students, and works under the direction of the teacher. The Instructional Assistant is a grant position related solely to the Unaccompanied Childrens Shelter as funded by the Office of Refugee Resettlement and any successor funding.

Essential Functions:

  • Assisting students in reviewing and completing assignments during class time;

  • Implementing classroom procedures and reinforcing students positive behavior;

  • Reinforcing organizational and note-taking skills;

  • Grading materials for immediate feedback;

  • Demonstrating use of the computer for drill and remediation, as well as for homework and classroom assignments;

  • Actively participates and assists in classroom instruction in cooperation with certified teacher;

  • Participates and contributes to in-service trainings and staff development opportunities;

  • Assisting and facilitating tutoring or one-on-one instructional time as required by student need under the direction and supervision of teacher;

  • Assisting crisis management up to and including physical restraints when appropriate;

  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalency required; Bachelors Degree preferred;

  • Must have State Approved Paraprofessional License;

  • A minimum of 1-2 years experience in classroom/school setting.

Skills/Knowledge:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish language competency required;

  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing;

  • Basic computer proficiency including working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;

  • Skill in organizing and prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines;

  • Skill in telephone etiquette;

Physical Demands:

  • Required to frequently sit, stand, bend, stoop, walk and drive for extended periods; ability to walk up and down stairs;

  • Required to occasionally lift/move objects and/or youth weighing in excess of 40 pounds;

  • Must possess the ability to provide physical restraint for students threatening to harm themselves or others;

  • Must have the visual, hearing, and learning capabilities sufficient to perform the essential functions defined above.

Environment and Scheduling:

  • Work is performed during school and vocational program days and hours;

  • Work is performed in classroom settings as well as in an administrative office settings;

  • Duties involve contact with students who may be traumatized.

Duties may vary but generally may include creating and conducting professional learning opportunities for teachers through one-on-one coaching, team coaching, or workshops as needed. Those hired after March 14, 2019, may function on a three to five-year rotation basis in this role. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Partners with teachers in the areas of increasing student learning via in-classroom coaching, unit/lesson design, classroom management, aligning instruction with state standards and district curriculum and developing effective classroom assessments. * Demonstrates the ability to effectively analyze student performance data and determine instructional implications at district, building and classroom levels. * Demonstrates knowledge of current standards, benchmarks, and district curriculum. * Provides demonstration lessons in curriculum and teaching techniques for classroom teachers and others as required. * Facilitates communication between and among teachers, within and across grade levels. * Works collaboratively with building principals to build capacity within the buildings. * Possesses advanced knowledge of best practices in teaching pedagogy. * Assists in the implementation of staff development components of the BOE Goals, District initiatives, and School Improvement Plans. * Plans and provides professional learning opportunities for teachers by conducting one-on-one coaching, team coaching or workshops. * Models best practice strategies for coaching adult learners. * Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing. * May be asked to attend evening and summer meetings and work a flexible schedule. * May serve on District committees and/or task forces. * May research, organize and share materials with district staff. * Performs other duties as assigned.
