Job Description Summary

This position will be assigned to the San Luis Obispo Campus and may occasionally need to travel to the South County Center in Arroyo Grande. This position is eligible for a 5% bilingual stipend in addition to the monthly salary.

DEFINITION

Under the general direction of the Associate Director, Continuing Education & Special Programs, provide specialized and technical assistance to students, staff, campus-wide departments/divisions, and the public. Provide other services of a San Luis Obispo Community College District instructional site including the day-to-day activities of the direct services at the designated instructional site.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Bilingual Continuing Education Student Support Assistant is distinguished from other classes of employment in that incumbents are expected to deliver information and services related to a wide spectrum of Noncredit Student Support services, Continuing Education, and Noncredit programs, with the ability to work under a minimum of supervision and to problem solve a wide array of circumstances. (Typically, an employee in this classification may serve at a satellite center or as an evening employee.)

Incumbents in this position support student learning outcomes and institutional effectiveness by assisting students, faculty, and the public to ensure they receive accurate and informed assistance in an efficient and welcoming environment.

Essential Functions & Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Implement the day-to-day activities within the designated department/division for the instructional site;

  • Inform potential students and the general public of Noncredit programs and services;

  • Assist students and the general public with the noncredit admissions and registration process;

  • Assist students with the core services of the Noncredit Student Success & Support Program;

  • Process noncredit student registrations;

  • Process noncredit student records in the information database systems, including but not limited to Tops Enterprise, SARS and Banner;

  • Learn, interpret, and apply admission and registration rules, regulations, and policies;

  • Receive forms, check for completeness and accuracy, and enter into computer database;

  • Provide admissions, financial aid, student services, academic programs, and institutional information and processes related to student enrollment;

  • Schedule appointments for students for a variety of Student Support Services within the Continuing Education Program, including but not limited to scheduling students for the Pearson Vue GED testing service and noncredit counseling;

  • Monitor test-takers during the Pearson VUE GED testing process;

  • Respond to telephone, written, and electronic inquiries regarding student support services for noncredit programs;

  • Assist and/or train student and hourly employees;

  • Learn and effectively implement emergency procedures for the site;

  • Present information to students/prospective students on college programs and services both on and off campus;

  • Work as part of a team to connect students to academic and support resources;

  • Research and describe Cuesta College's inventory of course offerings including credit, non-credit and community programs;

  • Create computer generated informational material for students;

  • Order, receive, organize, and maintain materials, forms and supplies;

  • Work independently with a minimum of supervision;

  • Participate in staff development opportunities and on and off campus activities/meetings when possible and when it does not interrupt the services at the instructional site; and

  • Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Required

  • Equivalent to high school graduation or equivalent;

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (oral and written).

Preferred

  • Associate degree preferred.

Experience:

Required

  • Two years' of customer service experience, preferably working with students or the public.

Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of:

  • District, policies, rules related to student services and other services provided by the District;

  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills;

  • District student account and refund policies;

  • Customer service skills;

  • Current technologies, personal computer, and associated office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and/or database software;

  • Correct usage of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary; and

  • District policies and procedures.

Ability to:

  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions;

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties; and

  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and of staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.

Physical ability to:

  • Read and comprehend printed matter and text and data on computer monitors;

  • Communicate intelligibly and effectively via speech, telephone, written correspondence, and/or email;

  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time;

  • Lift and/or carry 25 pounds; and

  • Exert manual dexterity sufficient for keyboard and other office equipment operation.

License and Certificates(current within the last year or must be continuously current):

Required

  • Valid driver's license and eligible to obtain California driver's license upon hire.

SALARY SCHEDULE

Below is the full salary schedule range for this position, steps A through E. Per Cuesta College's bargaining agreement, new employees are placed at Steps A through C, which is the anticipated hiring range also listed below.   • Salary Schedule Range: $4,229 - $5,141 per month.

  • Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,229 - $4,663 per month.
