Project Background

The goal of The Big Lift Inspiring Summers (BLIS) is to stem the tide of summer learning loss for low-income children in San Mateo County by immersing them in a five-week, full-day program. BLIS provides literacy and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) content for entering kindergarten, first and second grades in a learning environment ripe with innovation, hands-on activities, technology, enrichments and nutritious meals and activities for their bodies such as yoga and outdoor play. BLIS is designed to be academic and inspiring; engaging children in a love of learning while putting them on the path to reading proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Implementing literacy curricula and activities to meet academic standards

  • Utilizing formal assessment data to refine and adapt curriculum lessons and inform instructional practices

  • Developing daily engaging lesson plans aligned to specific learning objectives

  • Delivering relevant, engaging, and rigorous lessons utilizing a variety of instructional methods

  • Maintaining an organized and efficient classroom

  • Adhering to all BELL and district professional expectations and compliance issues

  • Creating a positive, achievement-oriented, organized and engaging learning environment

  • Motivating and holding scholars to high academic and behavioral expectations

  • Providing consistent rewards and/or consequences for scholar behavior grounded in positive discipline

  • Empowering scholars to make positive choices and serving as a role model

  • Being accountable for meeting scholars 'individual academic and instructional needs

  • Implementing collaborative and co-teaching instructional strategies with BELL tutors

  • Communicating effectively with scholars, families, BELL staff, and host school staff

  • Compliance with all BELL and/or district professional development requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred

  • Minimum two years of teaching experience in an urban public school with primary-grade children

  • Experience in Kindergarten preferred

  • Valid teaching certification in California

  • Previous and relevant experience in utilizing and implementing data-driven instructional practices

  • Experience in the use of technology (computer/internet) for assessment and instruction

  • Knowledge of differentiated instructional practices and strategies

  • Drive to improve the minds and lives of scholars within their community

  • Proven track-record of high achievement in a classroom setting

  • Mastery of and enthusiasm for literacy academic standards and instructional rigor

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

  • Committed to the goals of the program and approach

  • Love and respect for children

  • Evidence of efficacy and willingness to be a team player

  • Belief and commitment to The Big Lift and BELL's mission and values

Coach with The Big Lift: The Big Lift programs include certified teachers with leadership experience who serve as instructional coaches in our summer programs. Coaches provide individualized support and feedback to classroom teachers and teaching assistants to improve overall instruction in ELA, student engagement, and achievement. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities * Strong communication and interpersonal skills with various stakeholders, including scholars, families, BELL, Inspiring Summers and district colleagues * Demonstrated knowledge of research-based instructional strategies that engage all students across subject areas (ELA) * Content area expertise in ELA * Ability to identify staff learning needs, and design and deliver appropriate individualized or group professional development and coaching to meet needs * Demonstrated ability to use data to inform student groupings and differentiate instruction * Strong working knowledge of instructional shifts necessary for alignment to the Common Core State Standards * Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, and adjust and adapt instructional strategies swiftly given the short duration of summer programs (5 weeks) * Evidence of efficacy and willingness to be a team player * Demonstrated ability to lead a team Responsibilities The Instructional Coach has three primary responsibilities: 1) Pre-service professional development and ongoing coaching for teachers and teaching assistants 2) Proving leadership on the implementation of instruction and meeting the academic needs of students 3) Analyzing assessment data to inform instruction and instructional groupings Professional Development & Coaching * Adapt and facilitate professional development for instructional staff on at least the following topics prior to site launch and ongoing as needed: * BELL's approach, philosophy and Standard of Practice * BELL's site and program expectations and procedures * BELL's curriculum and assessment methods * Using data to inform instruction and student groupings * Lesson planning and differentiating instruction * Behavior management * Conduct classroom observations to ensure proper implementation of curriculum, instructional practices, and classroom/behavior management * Provide feedback to staff on instructional practices * Identify staff learning needs and develop just-in-time, appropriate individualized or group professional development and coaching to meet needs * Review lesson plans and other instructional support tools, provide timely feedback, and create and maintain "best practice" instructional strategies and resources for staff Leadership & Relationships * Oversee the implementation of instruction, including curriculum implementation, instructional methods and practices, and classroom and behavior management * Collaborate with members of the Site Leadership Team to ensure a safe, productive, and efficient program for staff and scholars * Raise issues with Site Leadership Team as appropriate, particularly related to the safety and achievement of scholars * Monitor scholars' educational and social progress and make necessary recommendations for adjustments Proficiency with Assessments & Use of Assessment Data * Review and analyze diagnostic and on-going formal assessment data with teaching staff and develop appropriate instructional groups * Coach staff on continuing use of assessments and assessment data to adjust instruction and instructional groupings * Coach and support staff in the implementation of data-driven and differentiated instructional practices in both literacy and mathematics * Ensure uniformity and timeliness of assessments and family reporting Participate in Professional Development * Comply with all BELL and/or district professional development requirements Additional Qualifications * Bachelor's degree required.
