Job Overview

The Manager, Benefits is responsible to assist benefits leadership with the management of US and Canada employee benefit programs and compliance with applicable laws and regulations to include any legacy benefit programs such as Covance, Chiltern, etc. The position evaluates and compares existing company benefits with those of other employers; develops specific recommendations for review by benefits management. Implements new or modified benefit plans and policies; supervises administration of existing plans. Identifies continuous process improvement opportunities and drives improvements using data driven decision making and develops functional expertise of benefits support staff.

Other Responsibilities include:

  • Provide oversight of benefits program as directed by benefits senior management including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401(k) / pension, leave of absence policies, short- and long-term disability, Severance Plan, Employee Assistance Program, Tuition Reimbursement, etc.

  • Interpret benefit plan previsions and resolve associated conflicts.

  • Partner with vendors on modeling of benefit changes and estimated projected cost / savings.

  • Participate in special projects as directed by benefits management

Mergers and Acquisitions-M&A (includes but not limited to)

  • Works with the Enterprise benefits team for all M&A projects especially related to Drug Development.

  • Assists in due diligence and performs final review of all financial reporting as related to M&A.

  • Reviews all final due diligence reports prior to submitting to HR leadership team.

  • Assist with any DC, DB and non-qualified plan integration processes to ensure adequate internal controls and audit processes are conducted timely. Responsible for working with leads in developing work plan and managing plan terminations, integrations, compiling and reviewing related M&A due diligence. Ability to analyze, understand and recommend treatment for complex administrative and accounting issues and transactions.

  • Develops and implements employee and leadership educational programs related to transition, integration, etc.

  • Revises administrative procedures of various benefit programs to comply with updated/revised IRS regulations.

  • Assists with and supports as needed any required plan audits, government filings, etc.


  • Bachelor's degree

  • Master's degree strongly preferred

  • Certification (CEBS or CBP) in a benefits related area or progress toward obtaining


  • Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible benefits experience, at least 3 of which must be at a supervisory level.

  • Previous benefits plan management and administration experience with all benefit plans.

  • Strong experience in M&A.

  • Large corporation (1000+ employees) experience.

  • Management experience which has demonstrated solid problem solving and analytical ability.

  • Track record of accomplishment in benefit administration, vendor management and cost management.

  • Experience in benefit plan design and negotiations with plan vendors and consultants.

  • Experience in managing/administering Canadian benefits programs.

Second language skills encouraged. * Minimum H.S. diploma or equivalent required. Additional education and training preferred.
