Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

The role of the Benefits Consultant is to support the agency goal of recruiting, supporting and maintaining a competent and diverse workforce by administering a broad range of benefits services for current employees, new hires, and separating employees. Serves as subject matter expert in state benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of policies and practices related to the administration of employee benefits, with ability to analyze, make corrective action, and suggest resolution of complex benefits-related problems.

  • Ability to handle diverse and confidential information requiring extreme accuracy, independent judgement and discretion.

  • Demonstrated ability to consult with agency management on benefits issues and policy compliance.

  • Experience with Cardinal/HRIS, workers' comp reporting portal, and VNav.

  • Extensive knowledge of Workers' Compensation and VSDP program guidelines and experience processing claims.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures related to health insurance, life insurance, disability and retirement programs.

  • Ability to consult effectively with all levels of staff and management to provide guidance regarding State and agency human resource policies, procedures, and practices.

  • Ability to work independently and to effectively interact in a team or project environment with a wide range of management, technical, HR, benefits, and payroll employees.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments.

  • Ability to adapt to changes in processes, procedures, and technology.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in verbal and non-verbal ways (including body language and tone), and in writing.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Experience working with customers and co-workers either in person, by telephone, and electronically.

Additional Considerations

  • Considerable, progressively responsible experience in administering employee benefits.
