The Behavioral Health Technician is an active part of the treatment team responsible for providing continuous patient care, supervision, education, interaction and role modeling to patients in the age range specific to the unit to which they are assigned. The Behavioral Health Technician works under the direction of a registered nurse (RN). Other responsibilities include maintaining a safe and clean environment, monitoring patients for safety, performing basic nursing care, and preparing patients for procedures.
Essential Job Functions:
Performs basic nursing care and treatment procedures on assigned patients as directed by the RN
Recognizes and responds to changes in patient care responsibilities based on change in patient behavioral condition and diagnosis
Participates in admission process by orienting patient and family to room and environment
Assists patients through discharge process
Checks patients for contraband, manages patient valuables and belongings and documents their disposition
Identifies patient physical care and comfort needs; performs care.
Observes and documents vital signs
Performs and documents 15 minute checks on patients
Assists with ambulation and activities of daily living, such as eating, dressing and bathing as needed
Actively participates in shift change report which includes a detailed description of the patient's status and the mood of the unit
Performs and documents POC Blood Glucose testing
Able to perform phlebotomy and EKG functions
Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent required; Associates or Bachelor's Degree preferred. Non-violent crisis intervention (CPI) training required. BLS Certification required or ability to obtain within 30 days. Minimum of 1 year of experience in direct patient care on Adult or Geriatric hospital psychiatry unit.
