The Behavioral Health Technician works under the supervision of the professional licensed nurse, performing clinical, as well as clerical functions within the behavioral inpatient service.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs clinical procedures within scope of practice such as accurately obtains and records patient vital signs and I & O, performs glucometry, phlebotomy and EKGs and collects specimens for diagnostic tests.

  • Demonstrates proper chain of command for work related issues.

  • Maintains clinical records of all patient contact according to hospital policy and other regulatory guidelines

  • Follows treatment plan as directed by licensed personnel

  • Assists with the admission process and documents pertinent information.

  • Supports the patient performing ADLs (Activities of Daily Living) - personal hygiene, nutrition, elimination. Performs or supports the patient while performing necessary physical care to ensure Activities of Daily Living are maintained - personal hygiene, nutrition, elimination, ambulation or physical mobility.

  • Monitors the therapeutic environment by performing safety checks and monitors patient status by performing patient observations and continual rounding. Assumes responsibility for maintaining a clean and orderly environment.

  • Communicates changes in patients' condition or unit milieu concerns with patient care team.

  • Demonstrates competence in caring for the agitated/violent patient, who may require treatment with seclusion/restraints.

  • Demonstrates skill as a member of the Control Team, in responding to agitation/violent behavior of individuals requiring verbal de-escalation and/or physical restraint.

  • Facilitates patient recreational and therapeutic activities under the direction of the professional licensed staff.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Must have ability to sit for 2 total hours per day, and up to 1 total consecutive hour. Must be able to stand for 8 total hours per day and up to 2 total consecutive hours.

Must be able to walk 6 total hours per day and up to 10 total consecutive minutes. Must have the ability to frequently use fingers/hands for fingering and handling. Must have the ability to use upper extremities for frequent pushing of objects up to 10 pounds and occasional pushing of objects up to 75 lbs.

Must have the ability to transport patients weighing up to 250 lbs. via wheelchair, stretcher and/or bed. Must have the ability for frequent stooping and bending. Must have the ability for frequent reaching above shoulder level.

Must have the ability for touching as it relates to feeling objects by touching with the skin, particularly that of fingertips. Must have the ability for hearing as it relates to normal conversation, high frequency and low frequency hearing sounds. Must have the ability for seeing as it relates to general vision, near vision, color vision and peripheral vision.

EDUCATION:

High School Graduate/GED required. BA/BS in human services field, or current student in BA/BS/Nursing School preferred.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Two years previous experience in mental health or medical setting preferred. Nurse or medical aide experience preferred. CPR certification required within 60 days of hire.

At all times the Behavioral Health Safety Specialist must display a professional, helpful, and positive demeanor when dealing with internal and external customers.</p><p>JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:</p><p>Monitors the therapeutic environment to ensure the safety for patients, employees and visitors by performing safety/contraband/environmental checks.</p><ul><li><p>Demonstrates competence, as a member of the security response team when responding to agitated / violent behavior of an individual requiring verbal de-escalation and / or physical restraint.</p></li><li><p>Monitors patient status by performing continual rounding or patient observations as assigned.</p></li></ul><p>Inventory patient personal belongings and log and secure valuables. Controls access to the Behavioral Health Unit through an admittance process. Assures visitors are not introducing contraband / weapons to the unit.</p><p>Endeavors to develop and to maintain a therapeutic rapport with patients at all times. Continually observes patients for early signs of distress and agitation to prevent escalation and uses the proper intervention technique.</p><p>Responds to situations requiring crisis intervention both on and off the Behavioral Health Unit including responses with the Control Team.</p><p>Intervenes to help prevent physical harm to patients, staff and visitors. Also supports Security in these efforts when called to the Unit.</p><p>Stands by during patient hearings and whenever unexpected or unpleasant information is going to be presented to a patient or family member. May call on duty Security staff to support when necessary.</p><p>Assumes responsibility for maintaining a clean and orderly environment.</p><p>May help facilitate patient recreational and therapeutic activities under the direction of the professional licensed staff.</p><p>Demonstrates proper chain of command for work related issues.</p><p>Organizes work time to respond to established priorities. Uses time effectively and productively during periods of low department activity.</p><p>Completes Departmental Orientation Checklist within 90 days of employment and completes all identified competencies for job description on an annual basis.</p><p>Attends department staff meetings a minimum of 50% of the time and trainings relevant to position. Participates in activities which promote personal/professional development. Frequent handling and firm gripping in moving equipment. <br><br> Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and walking of objects weighing in excess of 200 pounds with assistance if needed. Occasional stooping, bending, crouching, and reaching above shoulder level. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as it relates to general vision, color vision, and depth perception.</p><p>POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:</p><p>May be exposed to unpredictable, violent behavior, and/or psychological stress. Assault and battery-risk minimized by self defense training. <br><br> Punctures and lacerations of the skin Exposure to blood and body fluids Working in patient care areas; employees may have the potential exposure to patient with suspected or proven tuberculosis. Employee must have the ability to wear a particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with current recommendations of the CDC or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear particulate respirator.</p><p>SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE:</p><p>Protective gloves, gowns, goggles, and facemask. Follow CSDS and OSHA guidelines for exposure to chemical and biological hazards.</p><p>MOST COMPLEX DUTY:</p><p>Promoting and meeting daily needs of patients and maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment.</p><p>SUPERVISION (RECEIVED BY AND/OR GIVEN TO):</p><p>Supervised by the Clinical Supervisor/Patient Care Manager / RN / or designee.</p><p>COMMUNICATIONS:</p><p>Strong written and verbal skills are necessary in order to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, community agencies, and patients of various backgrounds.</p><p>EDUCATION:</p><p>High School Graduate/GED required.</p><p>TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:</p><p>Two years previous experience in situations requiring the ability to manage crisis situations including demanding or aggressive behavior. Previous security / security related or human service related experience is preferred.</p><p>Basic Life Support training completed within 60 days of hire.</p><p>Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training certification to be completed within 60 Days of hire.</p><p>WORK SCHEDULE:</p><p>Day, middle or night shift with varying hours based on the needs of the department. Shift rotation may be required to meet staffing needs.
