Position: Behavioral Health Specialist

Terms of Employment: Open Until Filled 10 months, State Salary Schedule, Regular State Benefits, Local Supplement

Supervisory Relationship: The Behavioral Health Specialists position reports to the

Executive Director of Behavioral Health, Crisis Intervention, and Student Safety.

Job Summary:

Behavioral Health Specialists coordinate behavioral health services and connect students to social-emotional and mental health supports within Rockingham County Schools. These individuals will provide direct services to students, collaborate with and provide consultation and professional development to school staff, and connect with other support agencies within Rockingham County to implement a full continuum of behavioral health/mental health services within the school district.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide mental health counseling services for students

  • Facilitate mental health teams in schools

  • Develop and lead small groups for students to develop coping, social skills, and social-emotional skills

  • Supervise behavioral health services and provide training for schools (for students and staff) Provide students with a full continuum of behavioral health supports for prevention and intervention in alignment with RCS Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)

  • Support facilitation of the RCS behavioral health implementation plan (in alignment with Project AWARE/ACTIVATE)

  • Provide a full continuum of support for prevention and intervention for behavioral health for students

  • Assist in the intake process for students entering the school system who have multiple agency involvement

  • Lead social-emotional learning efforts in schools

  • Assist school staff in developing functional behavior assessments and behavior intervention plans

  • Assist schools in providing social-emotional and behavioral health screenings for students to help them gain access to services

  • Serves as a member of the Behavioral Health Mobile Crisis Response Team (on a rotation basis)

  • Assist school staff in providing support for students in crisis situations

  • Monitor Say Something Anonymous Reporting App in collaboration with the school and Executive Director of Behavioral Health, Crisis Intervention, and Student Safety

  • Provide staff training in areas of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, behavioral preventive strategies, etc. Act as liaison between Rockingham County Schools and outside agencies (e.g. DJJ, private providers, DSS, etc.)

  • Serve, participate, and lead the Behavioral Health District Integrated Response Teams in each of their schools Work in collaboration with Specialized Instructional Support Personnel to provide support to students in need of behavioral health services

  • Work with IEP teams to ensure that behavioral health and social-emotional supports and services are in place for students

  • Work directly with students who may have social-emotional needs that require specialized plans and individual education plans (IEP)

  • Provide counseling support through Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and general education plans

  • Collaborate with RCS Day Treatment Program to ensure referrals are complete and submitted efficiently from schools, Communicate with schools about appropriate referrals for this program

  • Collaborate with the EC department for students entering the EC program with behavioral needs

  • Collaborate with RCS Mental Health Partners and RCS Mental Health Advisory

  • Meet regularly with the Executive Director of Behavioral Health, Crisis Intervention, and Student Safety to create interventions and full continuum of behavioral health/mental health supports in the district Understand and be willing to learn how to bill Medicaid Serve on District Crisis Team, Mental Health Advisory Team, and Behavioral Health Leadership Team

  • Other related job duties as needed

Qualifications:

A graduate degree in mental health counseling and/or related field with mental health licensure, social work, psychology, school counseling, or school psychology

Have one of the following active NC clinical license or working toward licensure: Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCHMC) (or) Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (LPC-A) (or) Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW or LCSWA) (or) Or other appropriate mental health licensure or Specialized Instructional Support Personnel license

At least two years of mental health experience

Prefer experience working in the public school setting or experience collaborating with schools Background in working with students who may be at risk and youth who have a history of mental health needs

Comprehensive knowledge of service delivery systems within the mental health system

Understanding of and practices system of care principles

Excellent interagency collaboration and coordination skills

Willing to obtain Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training and willingness to become a trainer (and in other certifications deemed for mental health implementation)
