Characteristics of Work Benefits Supplemental Questions

This is professional work which involves diagnostic psychological techniques designed to appraise intelligence, memory, personality and other psychological functions of individuals and groups. The work also includes individual psychotherapy and counseling, psychological research into mental disorders and aging, and development of behavioral intervention plans.

Incumbents in this classification receive general supervision or direction from an administrative superior, clinical director or a psychologist of a higher classification. The candidate works in coordination with interdisciplinary team. Their work is reviewed by consultation and conferences. Supervision is generally exercised over subordinate technical personnel and fellow research workers in their departments.

Examples of Work:Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to, the following:

Administers, scores and interprets both routine and complex psychological examinations to determine intelligence, mental deterioration, social maturity and other personal traits.

Interprets tests and psychological interview results for information to be used by psychiatric staff and other staff members for diagnosis and treatment.

Prepares detailed reports of observations, test findings, and other data.

Charts weekly on individual case management of patients/clients.

Plans and develops group therapy assignments.

Schedules individual therapy assignments.

Maintains necessary records/charts on each group or individual meeting.

Relates findings to the treatment team.

Participates in psychological research projects.

Consults with staff members.

Reviews work, records, and correspondence of staff members.

Attends conferences with psychiatrists, social workers and other staff members for diagnosis and treatment of cases.

All duties and/or assignments will be performed under appropriate psychological supervision.

Performs related or similar duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
These minimum qualifications have been agreed upon by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in this job class and are based upon a job analysis and the essential functions. However, if a candidate believes he/she is qualified for the job although he/she does not have the minimum qualifications set forth below, he/she may request special consideration through substitution of related education and experience, demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the position. Any request to substitute related education or experience for minimum qualifications must be addressed to the Mississippi State Personnel Board in writing, identifying the related education and experience which demonstrates the candidate's ability to perform all essential functions of the position.

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

A Doctorate Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Psychology, Counseling, Counselor Education, or Community Counseling including or supplemented by the completion of two (2) psychological testing/assessment courses which are acceptable to the appointing authority;

Applicants must attach a valid copy of his/her transcript or other evidence to verify completion of required course work.

It involves responsible technical work in a hospital or similar institution. Incumbents in this classification receive technical training on the job. Work is performed in close cooperation with nurses, doctors, Behavioral Health Specialists, and clerical personnel who are responsible for patients, residents, and/or consumers and must exercise close professional relationships with patients, residents, and/or consumers to establish confidence. Direct supervision is received from an administrative superior and/or a Psychologist. Examples of Work:Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to, the following: Assists in collecting various forms of behavioral data (frequency counts, duration information, interval sampling) to help determine further assessment needs and intervention needs to be reported to the appropriate personnel. Works with individuals or groups in appropriate active treatment and behavior management exercises to help promote better behavioral and mental health. Participates in team meetings with other staff members. Prepares documented information related to the collected behavioral data using Microsoft Excel, hand-written graphs, or pie charts. Engages in group psycho-educational counseling and/or skills training. Assists in research (data collection and computer analysis). Attends continuing education/in-service training. Acts as liaison between resident and treatment team providing case management. Treats patients, residents, and/or consumers using individual supportive counseling or psycho-educational interventions. Informs medical professionals regarding patient conditions and care. Compiles and analyzes data and performs administrative and clerical functions. Cares for patients, residents, and/or consumers with mental illnesses. Interacts with patients, residents, and/or consumers to build rapport or provide emotional support. Teaches patients, residents, and/or consumers to develop life skills. Assists individuals with therapeutic programming and leisure activities within the facility and on planned outings outside of the facility. Maintains individualized treatment plans for patients, residents, and/or consumers who outline treatment goals, objectives, interventions, and a time frame for completion. Informs physicians of questions and concerns of patients, residents, and/or consumers. Ensures that proper treatment team review documentation is completed properly. Assists physician by informing the doctor of behavioral changes to properly diagnose patients, residents, and/or consumers. Assists others with dealing with behavioral issues of patients, residents, and/or consumers. Performs data entry in various software programs.
