Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Behavioral Health Assistant.

In this role, the successful candidate Under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse performs technical and para-professional nursing and/or medical care procedures in the delivery of nursing in accordance with the established policies and procedures of the institution.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Takes vital signs such as patients' pulse, temperature, blood pressure, respiration height and weight.

  • Records these measures accurately in the patient's medical record.

  • Assists in patient admission process by recording/ reporting observed behavior, verbal responses and any interventions initiated such as, conversation, foods and fluids to the RN.

  • Adheres to appropriate infection control procedures particularly hand washing.

  • Monitors patients on close and special observation, e.g. S.O., Elopement, suicidal and homicidal observation.

  • Participates in interdisciplinary group and therapeutic meetings to plan treatment and discharge procedures.

  • Assist units with de-escalation techniques, assess unit's needs in conjunction with anger management.

  • May lead or assist in therapeutic groups on the unit such as anger management techniques, de-escalation techniques and team building skills on how to manage crisis.

  • Monitors patient's interactions and behaviors on the unit.

  • Participates in therapeutic activities and games on unit.

  • Assists with the distribution of food trays and monitoring patients in the dining room.

  • Assists patients with grooming activities.

  • Assists with transfer/transport of patients to other units, diagnostic test procedures, etc.

  • Attend peer group meetings and other meetings as assigned.

  • Demonstrates know ledge of seclusion and skills in the application of restraints according to hospital policy and procedures.

  • Performs technical aspects of patient care according to established policies and procedures, utilizing proper techniques, and adapt these techniques to the unique needs of the individual patients.

  • Actively participates and responds appropriately to patient emergencies, such as rapid response, crisis management, cardiac arrest or respiratory failure.

  • Observes and monitors patient's mental & physical status during activities and other direct/indirect patient contact; report changes in behavior to the nurse that may affect the therapeutic milieu.

  • Reinforces patient education, patient safety and environmental safety to Head Nurse/Charge Nurse taking into consideration cultural and religious preferences.

  • Demonstrates a sensitive supportive attitude toward patients, families and or significant other.

  • Ensures a safe secure environment free of hazards to reduce the risk of injury to all customers. (Patients, visitors and staff.)

  • Explains, involves and instructs patients/ families concerning the therapeutic regimen and environment of care.

  • Demonstrates flexibility according to workload, unit activity, crisis and/ or emergency situation.

  • Meets all compliance standards/ requirements, such as Annual Physical Evaluation, mandates, Violence Reduction Crisis Intervention and Customer Service Training.

  • Enhances personal and professional development through attendance to internal in-service training and external educational offerings.

  • Demonstrates a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:

To qualify you must have a 1. Associates degree in, social services or a health-related area; or A High School diploma or a G.E.D. and one (1) year of full-time experience in nursing or psychiatric/behavioral health in a high volume, intensive care environment & BLS Certification from AHA.

2.Successful completion of an appropriate training program in the application and use of restraints and seclusion must be completed prior to an individual performing such work (required within 90 days of start date)

3.Successful completion of an appropriate training in the performance of vital signs and grooming, (required within 90 days of start date)

4.Ability to read and write at an elementary school level to understand the patient's plan of care and to record data on the patient's medical record

5.Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations at an elementary school level in order to take and record the patient's weight, vital signs, I & O

6.Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with patients and their families that demonstrate recognition of cultural diversity

7.Basic analytical skills in order to gather data, complete comparisons, interpret, & report outcomes to the nurse or document on the medical record.

8.Ability to manage and perform multiple tasks simultaneously

9.Must possess excellent customer service skills

  • Patients Rights (42 CFR Part 482), before applying restraints, implementing seclusion, performing associated monitoring of the restrained or secluded individual, or providing care for such individual, staff must be trained and able to demonstrate competency in the performance of these actions.

Long Island Community Hospital provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $44,928.00 - $44,928.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
