The Peer Support Specialist provides peer support services in a Peer Drop In Center setting. Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team that provides recovery-oriented services for adults with mental illnesses. The Peer Support Specialists are integral in supporting individuals during a crisis, helping individuals learn how to view crisis and stress differing and supporting individuals through their recovery. Peer support specialists support individuals in using wellness tools and connect individuals to other services and supports in the community as appropriate. The peer recover specialist will provide one on one peer support as well as wellness groups. The Peer Support Specialist must be a consumer who is in recovery from a mental illness and has (or is able to within 6 months of hire) complete 20 hours of training and passed a competency exam based on that Peer Support Training. Peer Support Specialist will assist in care coordination efforts, health promotion, individual and Family Support, Referrals to Community Agencies, etc.

Responsibilities
Care Coordination & Referrals
Outreach activities to members to engage peer recovery services.
Connect individuals in need to services in the community.
Provide support to guests in peer drop in center by connecting them to services they may need in order to increase their overall wellbeing.
Health Promotion
Promoting members' health and ensuring all personal health goals are included in person centered treatment plans.
Promote substance abuse prevention, smoking prevention and cessation, nutritional counseling, obesity reduction and increased physical activity.
Provide health education to members and family members.
Provide self-management support and development of self-management plans.
Promote self-direction and skill development in area of medication and medication adherence.
Provide prevention education.
Individual & Family Support
Provide assistance to members in accessing needed self-help and peer support services.
Assist members to identify and develop social support networks.
Assist with medication and treatment management adherence.
Identify community resources that will help member and their families reduce barriers to their highest level of health and success.
Linkage and support for community resources and connection to peer advocacy groups, wellness programs, NAMI, etc.
Qualifications
Education:
High School Diploma
Preferred associate or bachelor's degree in human services or a related field
Experience:
License(s)/Certification(s):
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Demonstrated ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to a wide range of client situations.
Able to accurately collect and assess information, understand ethical standards of behavioral healthcare, and utilize teaching/learning theories.
Demonstrated excellent communication skills (orally and in writing) and presents self in a professional manner.
Able to establish effective consultative relationship with health care providers, outside agencies, co-workers, and the community.
Able to work sensitively with clients.
Able to handle multiple priorities, maintain composure under stress, and adapt to a fast paced changing environment.
Proficiency in the use of computer programs including Microsoft Office and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) applications
