Summary: The behavior specialist understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences. The behavior specialist uses understanding of individual differences and diverse cultures and communities to ensure inclusive learning environments that enable each learner to meet high standards or academic and social/emotional achievement. The behavior specialist understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the behavior specialist’s and learner’s decision making. Below are the preferred functions for the behavior specialist role:Essential Functions:
  • Serve as an integral part of the school leadership team and support principal with trauma informed care of students and positive behavior support implementation.
  • Support in the implementation of the Board of Education approved Behavioral Flowchart and Matrix, providing tiered interventions.
  • Deep knowledge of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support and Response-to-Interventions Models.
  • Provide in-class, in-person supports and teaching of SEL (Social-Emotional Learning) instructional units on a weekly basis.
  • Conduct Functional Behavioral Analysis for students with IEPs at their 3-year re-evaluation for specialized services or initial eligibility meeting.
  • Investigate principal, teacher, student, or parent concerns as it relates to the overall well-being of students.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of how children/adolescents learn and develop.
  • Designs and implements developmentally appropriate interventions.
  • Make appropriate and timely provisions for individual students with particular learning differences and needs.
  • Differentiates interventions according to students’ learning differences or needs.
  • Collaborates with students, families, and colleagues to build a safe, trauma-informed, positive school climate of openness, mutual respect, and support.
  • Communicates with students, staff, and families in ways that respect the Mojave culture and promotes a positive school climate.
  • Establishes and monitors elements of a safe and productive learning environment, including norms, expectations, routines, and organizational structures.
  • Assesses, monitors, and provides feedback to students on their academic and/or behavioral progress.
  • Evaluates and adjusts strategies and interventions based on student outcomes.
  • Collects and reviews data related to school climate goals.
  • Varies roles during the instructional process (e.g., instructor, facilitator, guide, and observer).
  • Engages in ongoing learning opportunities to develop and apply knowledge and skills.
  • Uses multiple sources of evidence to self-assess professional practice.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of legal and ethical rights and responsibilities.
  • Takes an active role in counseling and/or providing social/emotional supports to students.
  • Works with other school related professionals to plan and jointly facilitate learning on how to meet the diverse needs of learners.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned by the principal or their designee.
Education:The successful candidate will have a Bachelor of Science or Arts in school counseling, psychology, or related field (school psychology, social psychology, learning/behavior specialist), licensed and certified by state. A Master’s in school counseling, as a learning/behavior specialist, or school psychology highly desirable. Experience:For entry-level candidates, a four-year college degree as mentioned above with internship experience, required for interviewsCandidates with 3+ years of experience, desirable.Certificates and Licenses: National and/or state certifications in counseling, school counseling, school psychology, applied behavior analysis, learning/behavior specialist.Physical Demands:Candidates must be able to lift up/carry up to 50 lbs., bend, walk briskly, manage one’s own responses and reactions to challenging situations.
