The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Program/Project Coordinator (Behavior and Training Manager) to support the Animal Care Division.

General Description

The key responsibilities of this position are to continue to develop the adoption and embedment of a comprehensive animal behavior program. These concepts will include: establishing a common language behind behavioral concepts, properly recording behavior information within Chameleon and leading other staff to do such, and providing behavioral guidance post-adoption and pre-surrender to guardians (directly, via training of staff, or by creating informational collateral), guiding the interviewing of people bringing animals to the shelter to collect behavior information, building community behavior and training programs, and directing staff in daily handling, interaction, and enrichment methodologies to support behavioral health.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in business, public administration or closely related field.

(One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.)

Requires two (2) years experience in a staff or administrative capacity managing special projects, programs or business operations appropriate to the area of assignment or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses Required

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E driver's license based on area of assignment.

Applicants must have a professional training/behavior certification from one of the following certifying bodies and adhere to the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior's position statement on Humane Dog Training.

          -KPA-CTC (Karen Pryor Academy)

          -CTC (The Academy for Dog Trainers)

          -AVBT (The Academy of Veterinary Behavior Technicians)

          -ACVB (The American College of Veterinary Behaviorists)

          -ACAAB, CAAB (Animal Behavior Society)

          -CPDT-KA, CPDT-KSA, or CBCC-KA (Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers)

          -CDBC, CCBC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants)

          -PCT-A, PCBC-A (Pet Professional Guild)

Preferences

One year of experience working with Chameleon.

Three years of experience working as a certified behaviorist.

Three years of experience working as a manager.

Additional Information:

The Animal Care Specialist position is a safety-sensitive position. Candidates selected for employment will be subject to pre-employment verifications to include but not limited to; post-offer physical examination/drug test and clearance of the Department of Children and Families Affidavit of Good Moral Character.

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

The Behavior and Training Manager will be an integral partner to our dedicated team through the delivery of elevated ongoing learning, developing effective, efficient interventions and establishing new best practices to advance the welfare of animals.  The Behavior and Training Manager will be responsible for managing shelter animals' behavioral health, including assigning and conducting behavioral treatments and coordinating and conducting behavior evaluations and outcome pathway planning.

In addition to continuing to develop a behavior program for shelter pets and the community, this position oversees all animal care staff in the kennels. This requires working with kennel supervisors to ensure proper daily care and handling of animals, proper communication and interactions across sections, and quality customer service to those visiting the shelter.

To succeed in this role, the Behavior and Training Manager must have a comprehensive understanding of shelter animal behavior and animal learning principles, superior animal handling skills, and excellent interpersonal skills, including experience successfully coaching and mentoring people.

  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assigning training and behavior modification protocols to animals as appropriate; monitoring the implementation and effectiveness of treatment interventions.

  • Establishing a common language behind behavioral concepts.

  • Conducting daily behavior rounds of all animals in the shelter ensuring timely delivery of care and open communication.

  • Inputting new animals in the Chameleon behavior database, editing and updating behavior report summaries and revising behavior grades as needed.

  • Facilitating on-site introductions to receiving, placement partners and foster parents.

  • Training and supervising a team, holding regular meetings to share ideas and provide feedback and guidance.

  • Espousing positive, people-centric management approaches that are aligned with team and organizational core values.
