Before-School Sports Program Instructor

Do you have a skill or hobby you would like to share with others? The Town of Concord is seeking Program Instructors to lead sport activities for groups of students of all ages, before school from 8:00-8:50am throughout the school year, multiple days per week. This position requires considerable experience in leading groups of children in sport-related activities prior to the beginning of the school day. Sport Program Instructors are responsible for the overall development of teaching plan for the session, leading and teaching of the sport/game/physical activity to registered students. Sport Program Instructors are hired to deliver programs at one of three elementary schools, either Willard, Alcott, or Thoreau.

Pay range: $20.00 - $45.00/hour; starting pay based on qualifications. This is an hourly, part-time position, up to 6 hours per week.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Recreation Director, Sport Program Instructors lead sport activities for groups of students based on school grade, at structured times and varying days of the week. This position requires considerable experience in a specialized skill area or hobby with experience in teaching and leading others in learning the skill or specialty area. Program Instructors are responsible for the overall leading and teaching of the skill to registered customers. Programs will take place at specific elementary school locations: hired for one of the following locations: Willard, Alcott, or Thoreau.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Works with Recreation staff to coordinate program sessions with ages and times.

  • Works independently on program planning and coordination under general direction and supervision of Assistant Recreation Director or designated Staff.

  • Instructs and demonstrates correct and safe techniques to successfully perform the activity.

  • Assures all participants follow rules and policies set by the Recreation Department.

  • Follows all safety standards and evacuation procedures.

  • Maintains an open line of communication with Recreation Division staff regarding all situations concerning the program, participants, parents/caregivers, and other staff.

  • Follows all attendance sign in/sign out policies.

  • Oversees the maintenance of all supplies for each program, keeping the storage space, classrooms, and fields always tidy.

  • Builds effective relationships with participants and parents/caregivers.

  • Works scheduled hours at primary working location as program dictates. Occasionally will be asked to fill in for a different working location if someone calls in sick.

  • Assists in various departments or programs as the need arises.

  • Performs special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested; performs other related duties as required, directed or as the situation dictates.

  • Assures that actions and words are professional, service focused, family centered, and respectful always.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • 3-4 years of high school; advanced education in related field preferred.

  • Experience teaching or running sports and recreation programs preferred.

  • CPR and first aid certified preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Must agree to and pass a CORI and SORI Background Check, the cost of which will be borne by the Town.

  • Excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills.

  • A tremendous work ethic.

  • Ability to work autonomously as well as take action as needed

Employees are regularly required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear. Balancing, crouching, grasping, pulling, reaching and stooping may also be required; must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Work may be performed outdoors and/or in an atypical environment subject to moderate temperature variations, noise, odors, etc.
