Battalion Chief

Fire & Rescue

Employment Status: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Experience Required: Three years as a Fire & Rescue Captain rank or equivalent experience

Minimum Education Requirements: Associates degree and/or 60 hours of college level credit hours preferred

Direct Supervisor: Deputy Fire Chief

Primary Work Location: Operations Division internal to Fire & Rescue

Physical requirements: This is operative work requiring the exertion of up to and exceeding 50 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible    amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.

Certification: Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Driver/Pump Operator, HAZMAT Specialist, Valid Virginia Driver's License,

EMT, CPR, EVOC, ICS 400, ITR Module II, HTR Vehicle Extrication I       

Job Summary

Perform highly professional and skilled firefighting, emergency medical and hazardous materials 

tasks in supervising the activities of  equipment and personnel in an assigned station.  Responsible for 

ensuring that required forms and paperwork  are complete and submitted  as  required.  Serve as incident commander 

in directing activities at emergency incidents until relieved by a higher-ranking officer (volunteer or county employee).

Essential Job Functions

  •     Respond effectively and quickly to fire emergencies by using appropriate fire control and extinguishment

      techniques; assessing structural factors; using, repairing and maintaining equipment; assessing other factors of 

     chemical, electrical or hazardous nature; and locating, dealing with, and removing injured persons

  •     When in command of first arriving company or companies, evaluates the situation and determines the 

      necessity for additional firefighting or emergency medical agencies and exercise control of 

      emergency scene until properly relieved

  •     Provide emergency medical services to individuals by conducting an accurate initial assessment 

     of physical  condition and complications; performing appropriate triage in mass casualty situations; 

     selecting and using proper equipment; implementing appropriate medical techniques, 

     i.e., injections, CPR, and first aid; and determining when and who to call for assistance

  •     Responsible for the day-to-day administrative duties in assigned Fire & Rescue stations using 

     good communications skills and assigned programs in an efficient manner

  •     Working with other Battalion Chiefs, and the Deputy Chief, conduct vacation selections and matters dealing 

     with scheduling. Once the vacation selections are complete, will ensure accuracy on the scheduling 

     software and work on coverage while adhering to department Standard Operating

Guidelines and/or direction from the Fire & Rescue Chief.  Will be responsible for handling employee callouts 

     and coordinating appropriate shift coverage

  •     Will assist in the development of department Standard Operating Guidelines

  •     Work with the Training Division to ensure the training requirements of Operations assigned personnel are met

  •     Mentor probationary and personnel assigned to station including any training needs 

     and/or officer knowledge, skills, and abilities

  •     Responsible to follow and enforce all-department rules, regulations and safety procedures 

     related to work performance

  •     Responsible for the preparation and submission of reports, yearly employee 

     evaluations, performance improvement notes, performance goals, responses, and other matters 

     regarding to Battalion level matters in the Operations Division

  •     Will review pre-incident plans and reports, providing recommendations and corrections

  •     Will assign duties, as appropriate, to station personnel for efficient department operations

  •     Will assist the Fire & Rescue Chief with budget recommendations

  •     Encourages and fosters good working relationship with volunteer Fire & Rescue agencies

  •     Normally works alongside and performs job duties of those people supervised

  •     Maintain emergency apparatus and equipment by using check sheets weekly and making 

     minor repairs or corrections as needed

  •     Maintain physical conditioning through a weight and cardiac training program

  •     Maintain Fire & Rescue station buildings in assigned area by performing general housekeeping 

     and making minor repairs when needed

  •     Maintain knowledge of current federal, state, and local regulations regarding privacy practices 

     and release of information

  •     Pass an NFPA 1582 physical administered by a physician prior to employment and annually

  •     Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or Department Chief Officer

Knowledge

  •     Basic knowledge of the computer and internet

  •     HIPAA laws and regulations

  •     Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services

  •     Relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, and federal security 

     operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions

  •     Regular work attendance is required

  •     Business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, 

     human resource management, leadership techniques, production methods, and coordination 

     of people and resources

  •     Identify complex problems and reviewing relevant information to develop and evaluate 

     options and implement solutions

  •     Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, 

      conclusions or approaches to problems
