This position posting runs on a continuous open cycle and creates a pool of candidates for consideration when part time employment is available. Applicants are reviewed when they apply and hiring supervisors are notified of all qualified applicants. Applicants are notified if they have been selected to complete a hire process only if a job is available to be filled for class instruction. Only qualified, credentialed applicants will be considered.

Law Enforcement Instructors prepare students for state and national credentials as well as provide high quality continuing education for current credentialed workers. Classes include BLET instructional and/or specialty blocks.

Applicants must submit a copy (can be unofficial) of their transcripts to complete the application.  A copy of your transcript(s) is required to evaluate your credentials to meet SACS requirements.  You will be required to submit official transcripts if you are placed in a position.

Mayland Community College is a small, comprehensive community college located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. The College serves over 8,000 general education, vocational, and technical students each year through curriculum education classes. The College is one of the 58 institutions in the North Carolina Community College System and serves an area of approximately 50,000 persons. Total annual institutional FTE is 2,000.

  • Provide classroom instruction using effective teaching methods.

  • Instruction is to be provided based on the most current Criminal Justice standards.

  • Provides classroom instruction using effective teaching methods.

  • Responsible for a safe learning environment

  • Needs to have the ability to organize and present various curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying backgrounds and abilities and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.

  • Needs strong communication skills to deliver course content.

  • Must evaluate and report student performances and progress in class in accordance with college and division policy and procedures.

  • Responsible for accurate record keeping of student attendance and academic progress.

  • Responsible for keeping supervisor aware of any student issues.

  • Responsible for keeping supervisor aware of any supply or equipment needs.

  • Provides academic counseling as appropriate.

  • Other duties as assigned.

  • The applicant must hold a NC General Instructor certification or a Professional Lecturer certification issued by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

  • Must have 2-3 years of experience with a local, state or federal government agency.

  • Must possess good communication skills.

Licensing Requirement:

Valid NC driver's license.

Physical Demands:

Lecture and practical exercises with extended periods of sitting, standing or climbing stairs. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds for classroom set-up both on and off campus. Bending, stooping, high intense movement that is necessary for scenario-based or skill-based instruction.

Working Conditions:

Indoors and Outdoors at times in inclement weather. May require flexibility in scheduling for some weekend classes or events.

Hazard Assessment:

Safety minded handling of several types of training equipment. Role playing in clinical settings may require extensive physical movement in hazardous conditions. May be exposed to loud noises and dangers inherent during firearms, defensive tactics and emergency vehicle operations training.
