BARN ATTENDANT

(Therapeutic Riding)

Part Time Weekdays (some holidays)

$18.75 per hour

Do you love horses and have horse handling and riding experience? Come join our Therapeutic Riding team at the renowned Helen Woodward Animal Center!

The Barn Attendant will weigh and feed hay to horses, feed special grains and supplements to horses, clean dirt based and shavings based stalls, dump, clean and re-fill water buckets, distribute bedding to stalls, hand walk, and turn out horses. Administer medication, inventory supplies such as feed, supplements and supplies.

Maintain barn and building cleanliness. Assist Instructors, volunteers, and program manager with horses before, during, and after lessons. Including but not limited to: grooming and tacking, lunging and riding as needed.

Oversee the care of the horses, including, but not limited to bathing and clipping. Prepare horses for and assist in lessons with volunteers and needed. Help recruit appropriate horses for the program.

Assist program manager with training and exercising of the horses including documentation, socializing and problem solving. Assist with equipment, machinery, and building maintenance. This position requires being able to work independently, as a team member, and participation in Center activities as needed or required.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS FOR BARN ATTENDANT:

Minimum 5 years riding experience is a must. English and/or western, English preferred.

This person must understand the basics of stable maintenance and possess knowledge of all types of equine food substances. Familiarity with different tack, to include English, Western, and specialized equipment is required. The position requires the ability to anticipate upcoming maintenance and/or repairs of grounds and equipment.

Skills in the safe, proper, and humane restraint and handling of horses are required. The ability to safely lift both 50 lbs alone and 115 lbs with assistance as well as push/pull up to 100 lbs is required.
