Opening for Spring Quarter*

Bellingham Technical College is establishing a pool of qualified candidates for the current academic year to work as Baristas (Food Service Workers) in the BTC Common Grounds Coffee Shop located on campus. Assignment begins April 1, 2019 and through June, 2019.

These are temporary, hourly assignments. Hours are not guaranteed and assignments are based on the needs of the department. Reports to the Director of Enterprise Services, with additional direction from the Food Service Manager/Chef.

Work schedule: 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday

Position Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform routine barista work in cashiering, serving food and preparing beverages;

  • Perform clean-up activities;

  • Cashier experience;

  • Barista training a plus;

  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Possession of, or eligible for, a Food Hander's permit (In Whatcom County, the Health Department offers the training & test online at www.foodworkercard.wa.gov. It takes about an hour and cost is $10);

  • Provide excellent customer service.

  • Experience preferred but not required.

Physical Work Environment:

Physically perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation to include, but not be limited to: working in an environment that requires operating equipment/machinery where reaching high and stooping low, bending and twisting, and manual dexterity are necessary functions. Requires the ability to lift and carry on a regular basis: tables, chairs, and other items weighing as much as fifty pounds. Requires being mobile on your feet 100% of the assigned shift; working with strong cleaning agents and hot water are also required.Supplemental Information

$12.00 per hour. Earns paid sick leave in accordance with Washington State law; no additional benefits.

Condition of Employment:

Finalist(s) in position handling cash will be subject to a pre-employment background check and employment is contingent on passing a criminal history background check satisfactory to the college.

Position(s) reports under the direct supervision of the Facilities Manager and may also take direction from the Operations Supervisor and assigned Lead(s). Position is responsible for the maintenance and care of the College's grounds and physical plant. Performs work in support of campus-wide operations, activities, events and projects (sales, moves, set-ups, installations, recycling and litter control activities, etc.). Position Duties & Responsibilities Typical duties include, but are not limited to: * Prepares soil for planting and maintains landscape beds; * Plants, transplants, trims, and waters plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs; * Applies pesticides and herbicides to flower and shrubs; * Uses a variety of manual hand tools and equipment such as rakes, pruning shears, hand edger's, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows, and pesticide sprayers; * Loads and unloads trucks and moves furniture, equipment, supplies and materials; * Assembles furniture; * Assists in building and repairing walkways, streets, parking areas, and other paved surfaces; * Assists in preparation for new construction, facilities alterations, and maintenance projects; * Responsible to serve a key role in the College emergency and management response efforts; this position, provides a critical role of being and providing a "presence", either individually or with additional Facilities team members, as needed for safety issues related to campus operations or facility monitoring; * Other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Six months of experience or comparable education/training involving grounds and utility maintenance work: such as, gardening, plant care, cultivation, and landscape installation. Physical ability to do required work AND six months experience, or comparable education/training, which includes the operation and upkeep of power equipment, such as: tampers, jackhammers, trucks, forklift, and tractors. Valid Washington Driver's License may be required for some assignments. Desired Qualifications: More than one year of experience or comparable education/training involving grounds maintenance (gardening, plant care, cultivation and landscape installation). Essential Elements: Have the ability and willingness to effectively communicate with all levels of campus personnel and students as an individual or in a group with respect and professionalism regardless of differences. Have the ability and willingness to work in a team environment and be committed to building an atmosphere of trust, competence, confidentiality, and positive service to the college and community. Physical Work Environment: This position performs work in an environment that requires lifting, shoving, pulling, pushing, and carrying of heavy objects, periodically in inclement weather. It involves working with strong chemicals and cleaning agents; stooping, bending, and reaching and walking will be required. Supplemental Information Compensation and Work Schedule: Effective January 1, 2019, $14.25 per hour; No additional benefits. Shift hours generally occur during the 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. workday.
