Bariatric & Diabetes Therapist ~Temporary Position

Job Summary: The Bariatric & Diabetes Therapist functions out of the Diabetes Treatment Center and counsels diabetic and bariatric patients and their families and provides disease self-management support.

Demonstrates advanced knowledge of the multifaceted psychosocial factors that have significant potential to affect short and long-term outcomes of and bariatric surgery patients, including emotional adjustment, adherence to the recommended postoperative lifestyle regimen, weight loss outcomes, and co-morbidity improvement and/or resolution. Performs individualized and culturally sensitive comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments and develops interventions, treatment strategies and discharge plans based on assessment findings. Serves as a key member of the physician-directed healthcare team and functions within a patient-centered care model of practice.

Participates in team conferences to coordinate implementation of treatment plan recommendations. Professionally applies clinically relevant methodology and theory to practice by providing support to clients and their families who are affected by altered biopsychosocial balance such as illness, injury, loss, grief, victimization, change in life-style or other situation that may impair their ability to function optimally. Recognizes signs, symptoms and physical indicators that raise suspicion of abuse, neglect, exploitation of client and/or any family member.

Follows policies and procedures for reporting. Provides emotional support, counseling services, crisis intervention and bereavement support for both the client and families as needed. Makes referrals for community services as appropriate. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Social Work, Psychology or Clinical Counseling required.

Minimum two years of experience in a clinical setting required.

Minimum one year of experience counseling patients with obesity, eating disorders or weight loss surgery preferred.

Knowledge and Skills: Substantial knowledge of the complex interplay of biological, psychological and social factors impacting health and wellness.

Must have respect for diversity and an ability to effectively work from a cross-cultural perspective with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds, ethnicities, sexual orientation and values. Advanced knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding psychotherapy practice and billing. Must understand performance improvement, quality, patient safety, evidenced-based clinical therapy practice standards and legal aspects of care required.

Knowledge of adult learning principles and problem-solving methodologies. Exhibits professional behavior at all times. Able to speak, read and write legibly in English (and Spanish highly preferred) with professional quality; use computer, printer and software programs necessary to the position, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, electronic medical record, electronic event reporting program; relate and communicate positively, effectively and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach and collaborate; accept direction; think critically; use sound judgment based on factual information and clinical knowledge; work independently with minimal supervision; meet deadlines; perform basic math and statistical functions; organize and prioritize workload; problem solve in a proactive and creative manner; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position.

Licensures and Certifications: Current Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in the State of California. Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
