Zingerman's Bakehouse is hiring a Cook to work on our Savory team making delicious breakfast and lunch foods!

Experience:

To be considered for this position all applicants must have one of the following criteria:

  • Previous experience working in kitchens, or other commercial food production

  • Formal culinary training completed or ongoing

  • Ability to clearly communicate or demonstrate sufficient ability to meet the essential job functions of this position through other personal experiences

Availability:

  • 8-9 hours shifts between the hours of 5am-1pm

  • Full-time - 30 hours/week

  • Available to work Saturday or Sunday

Physical Demands:

  • Able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly during an 8 hour shift

  • Comfortable standing, lifting, twisting, turning, and bending for duration of an 8 hour shift

  • Repetitive use and fine manipulation of hands

  • Comfortable with repetitive motion

  • Comfortable working in hot and cold environments

Essential Job Functions:

  • Creating high quality soups, sandwiches, salads, etc to serve to our guests fresh daily

  • Preparing vegetables and meat for use in recipes

  • Creating soups and stocks from scratch

  • Cooking using multi-range stove-tops, convection and conventional ovens, fryers and grills

  • Assist with inventory and creating prep lists

  • Receiving and inspecting meat, seafood, produce and other ingredients for quality

  • Maintain proper rotation and storage of all ingredients

  • Participate in recipe development and improvement

  • Following recipes to complete recipe components

  • Treats customers and co-workers with courtesy and respect

  • Work safely around hot ovens, stoves, fryers, slicers, heavy equipment and sharp utensils

  • Able to work well under pressure of deadlines

  • Work in a clean and organized fashion

  • Follow clearly documented food safety procedures

  • Able to perform detail oriented work with a high level of accuracy

  • Take direction from multiple leaders

  • Communicate at a high level within the department and Bakehouse

  • Complete detailed training requirements that can take up to 1.5 years

  • Attend and participate in department and business huddles (meetings)

  • Able to read and follow written recipes

  • Must be able to arrive to work on time

Who are we?

Zingerman's Bakehouse is a wholesale bakery, retail shop, and baking school for home bakers. We sell to specialty food stores, cafs and restaurants in southeastern Michigan as well as selling to Zingerman's Mail Order, who ships our baked goods everywhere in the United States. We are dedicated bakers and food lovers committed to making and selling the best breads, pastries and cakes we can imagine. We are real artisan bakers, meaning we use traditional methods and flavorful ingredient to make our food.

Where are we?

Zingerman's Bakehouse is located on the south side of Ann Arbor at 3711 Plaza Drive. While there is a bus stop within walking distance, the Bakehouse is NOT located on AATA bus route.

Who are we hiring?

The Savory Kitchen is looking for a full-time temporary cook. Shifts are around 8 hours between 5am-1pm. We are looking for team members who are available to work weekends and holidays. Experience with food prep, cooking or culinary school is preferred.

What does the job pay?

Pay range for this position is $11-12.50 or negotiable depending on experience.

The Chef Instructor reports to the Resident Chef. * Models and directs employees to ensure customer service standards are met. * Delivers an exceptional cooking class experience at every class using recipes and game plans provided. * Stays informed by maintaining product knowledge, accesses available training and seeks out additional resources when necessary. * Ensures high standards of sanitation and cleanliness are maintained throughout the experience by keeping work area and guest areas clean and organized. * Ensures all food items are cooked and served at the correct temperature and under sanitary conditions. * Works as a part of a high-performing team to achieve store's sales plan. Experience and Required Qualifications * 1-2 Years kitchen operations experience. * Culinary degree or equivalent Sous Chef experience considered in lieu of degree. * Demonstrated successful teaching and training experience. * Valid Food Handlers / Food Managers Certification. * Must be at least 21 years old. * Familiarity with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook). * Proven ability to drive sales and motivate teams. * Proven communication skills.
