Zingerman's Bakehouse is hiring an experienced Pastry Baker to work on our team making and baking hand crafted, artisan pastries to be enjoyed all over the country!

What are the requirements and skills needed for this job?

Availability:

  • 8-9 hours shifts normally schedule between the hours of 6am and 4pm ? Full time availability of 32-40 hours per week

  • Weekend availability

  • Holiday availability

  • Full availability in October, November and December (we don't take any extra time off during these months)

  • Education, baking experience or training in the culinary field of at least 2 years required

  • We are looking for someone who is passionate about baking as a long-term career

Essential Job Functions:

  • Participate on a team of bakers in the daily making of a wide variety of pastries ? Prepare recipes for baking including scaling and mixing

  • Portion recipes following weights to the 100th decimal point (ex. 5.62)

  • Using industry standard equipment for sheeting out dough

  • Using a piping bag with various tips

  • Load and unload ovens

  • Treats customers and co-workers with courtesy and respect

  • Work safely around hot ovens, heavy equipment and sharp utensils

  • Work in a clean and organized fashion

  • Follow clearly documented food safety procedures

  • Take direction from multiple leaders

  • Monitor and rotate ingredient levels using FIFO rotation

  • Follows ours and FDA traceability systems

  • Recycle and compost scraps and boxes

  • Support other areas on the pastry department (including the kitchen, the packaging area and the dishroom) when necessary

  • Must be able to understand numbers and number relationships (i.e. decimal points, fractions) ? Must be able to speak, read and write English

  • Able to focus and work in a busy environment

  • Communicate at a high level within the department and Bakehouse

  • Complete detailed training requirements

  • Attend and participate in department and business huddles (meetings)

Physical Demands:

  • Able to lift 55 pounds repeatedly during shift

  • Comfortable standing, lifting and bending for duration of shift

  • Comfortable with repetitive motion

  • Repetitive motion, with high levels of coordination, mobility, and dexterity

  • Education, baking experience or training in the culinary field of at least 2 years required

  • Experience in mass production a plus

Who are we?

Zingerman's Bakehouse is a wholesale bakery, retail shop, and baking school for home bakers. We sell to specialty food stores, cafés and restaurants in southeastern Michigan as well as selling to Zingerman's Mail Order, who ships our baked goods everywhere in the United States. We are dedicated bakers and food lovers committed to making and selling the best breads, pastries and cakes we can imagine. We are real artisan bakers, meaning we use traditional methods and flavorful ingredients to make our food.

Where are we?

Zingerman's Bakehouse is located on the south side of Ann Arbor at 3711 Plaza Drive. While there is a bus stop within walking distance, the Bakehouse is NOT located on AATA bus route.

Who are we hiring?

The Pastry Kitchen is looking for a full time Pastry Baker. Shifts are typically 8 hours between 6 am and 4 pm. We are looking for team members who are available to work weekends and holidays. Food industry schooling, training or relevant experience is required.

What does the job pay?

Starting pay is $17 per hour, or negotiable based on experience.
