The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is seeking a Background Investigator for its Sheriff's Personnel division. This position will coordinate and conduct pre-employment background investigations for the agency, and will work to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, rules, regulations, and organizational policies and procedures. This includes but not limited to Hennepin County Human Resource Rules, Minnesota Government Data Practices Act, as well as aligning your work with the Hennepin County Core Values.

Location and hours:

This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site in downtown Minneapolis at 350 South 5th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55415, and remote as job duties require. The primary work schedule will be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and may include occasional evenings, holidays, and/or weekends. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements, hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022 to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.

About the position type:

This is a full-time, limited duration (temporary), benefit-earning position expected to last up to two years, with the possibility of extension.

In this position, you will:

  • Recognize and respect cultural differences and provide culturally appropriate services.

  • Conduct comprehensive background studies on conditionally hired employees.

  • Conduct criminal record checks and interpret results on contractors, providers, medical staff, and volunteers.

  • Interview new hires, previous employers, and references.

  • Provide written summary reports for background studies following comprehensive background studies and present findings to administration.

  • Utilize multiple criminal justice information systems (local, state, and federal databases) as part of the background study process.

  • Conduct fingerprinting of new staff and submit fingerprints through the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

  • Perform other administrative projects and duties as assigned.

  • Work collaboratively with other business units, leaders, and staff.

Need to have:

  • One of the following:

  • Eight or more years of experience in general administrative work relating to the management of departmental/organizational operations or in a specialty area appropriate to the position.

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in public administration, business administration, criminal justice, social work, or other field appropriate to the position and four or more years of experience in general administrative work relating to the management of departmental/organizational operations or in a specialty area related to the position. General administrative work is defined as the administration and/or management of programs, policies, and/or budgets.

Access to reliable transportation to travel to worksites throughout Hennepin County. Nice to have:

  • Experience:

  • Conducting criminal record checks, analyzing, and interpreting results.

  • Managing large caseloads.

  • With public speaking/presenting.

  • Researching, reviewing, analyzing, and processing gathered data.

  • Conducting interviews of new hires, employers, references, etc.

  • Accessing, navigating, and utilizing local, state, and federal databases to obtain information.

  • Working with Data Practices Laws.

  • Writing and/or preparing reports.

  • Working with customers or clients from a variety of diverse backgrounds.

Ability to:

  • Think critically, exercising sound judgment without constant supervision, following high-level process and practice in a multitude of different work functions.

  • Work with sensitive and confidential information.

  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Be tech savvy and successfully learn and properly use a variety of digital platforms (to include internal client management systems, Microsoft products, Adobe, SharePoint).

  • Recognize work priorities and deadlines.

  • Manage projects within a team environment and independently.

  • Work independently.

  • Contribute to an inclusive and diverse workplace.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office serves the county's 1.2 million residents. State law mandates most of the sheriff's office duties, including managing the county jail, providing security to the district court, and patrolling the waterways in the county.
