Our Claims department is seeking an AVP, National Director of Litigation to join our growing team. We are flexible to hiring in any of the following locations: Worcester, MA; Roseville, CA; Itasca, IL; Syracuse, NY; Richmond, VA or Howell, MI.
As a member of our Legal Services management team, this role will be responsible for managing our relationship including expectations, service delivery, performance, and evaluation with all outside legal firms retained on behalf of The Hanover's Claims Department. This role will also be responsible for driving performance analytics around our legal expenses and, in partnership with the Analytics team, will have ownership of monthly and quarterly reporting regarding the same. The position will report to the Head of Staff Counsel Legal Services, and will interface directly with line-of-business, technical, financial, and audit counterparts.This is a Full-time, Exempt role.
Responsible for the development and maintenance of The Hanover Claim Department's list of "Panel" Counsel.
Responsible for policies and procedures relating to retention of Counsel rates and inclusion of counsel on our approved vendor list.
Responsible for building a vendor management program for our Panel Counsel
Responsible for developing and maintaining our internal Litigation Management Guidelines
Responsible for overseeing our external Litigation Management Guidelines and providing feedback to key stakeholders on all matters relevant to the retention and use of O/S counsel
Serves as the chairperson of our Panel Counsel Advisory Committee and leverages input and guidance of that group in executing the legal panel strategy
Working with Claims Analytics, is jointly responsible for monthly technical reporting on outside legal spend, trends, drivers
Will identify and monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Leads periodic analyses of select O/S counsel work product and value, both independently and in collaboration with claims audit, testing alternatives to the status quo
Will remain current on competitor intelligence which will include attendance at key industry conferences, knowledge of relevant vendor offerings, and an awareness of where our industry is heading in the litigation management space.
Must have a minimum of 15 years' collective experience relative to insurance litigation matters
Must have a minimum of 7 years of experience (10 or more preferred) in the direct oversight and management of litigated liability matters
Must demonstrate exceptional abilities in regard to analyzing issues, pro-actively developing effective strategies on pending cases, and influencing others
Must be able to communicate effectively with managing-partner roles within the private sector
Current bar license desired
Prior management or supervisory experience in an in-house or private law firm desired
Must possess strong analytical skills, including advanced skills in the use of Excel, Access, or other data-oriented software
Proven executive presence and leadership skills necessary to drive, influence, and execute on our litigation management program across the claims organization
Broad substantive and/or geographic litigation experience is a plus
Preferred location of this position will be in our Worcester home office or in one of our claims centers; travel (25%) is anticipated.
