As the Avoidance Savings Director, you'll be charged with leading the forecasting and capture of the various measures of avoidance savings attributable to Optum Payment Integrity (OPI) efforts. This position will assess current and new savings opportunities by leveraging insights from data, dashboards, tools, policies, industry trends and by soliciting input from a broad network of experts across Optum. Furthermore, you'll be responsible for managing the reporting and communication of that information to internal and external clients to support the invoicing of Optum performance fees.

This role requires you to work with financial and operational leaders across the enterprise to monitor and measure avoidance savings in three key areas: reduction in medical cost spend, reduction in administrative costs (SG&A), and financial benefits attributable to the increase in NPS and the reduction in abrasion.

This role requires both technical and professional leadership on the delivery of best in class OPI products, services and deliverables to clients. The role requires an ability to communicate effectively well with all levels of healthcare organization technical and non-technical staff, and an ability to develop strong client relationships through credible industry knowledge, and relevant expert strategic advice.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage the OPI avoidance forecasting and reporting efforts for Optum capabilities and initiatives being deployed across various tools within both UHC and Commercial segments

  • Perform quarterly trend forecasts and track monthly trend performance as well as other key metrics of the fully insured book of business

  • Provide quarterly regional trend performance tracking

  • Provide insight and identify opportunities for the business based on trend forecast and trend performance

  • Identify issues and unusual trend performance and provide meaningful explanations and insights, as well as help develop mitigation plan

  • Analyze and interpret the results of analyses and develop appropriate conclusions and recommendations

  • Evaluate unexpected events and business issues, and quantify the impact on the book of business

  • Support Ad Hoc cost and savings analytics and model enhancements

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify and develop business questions for analytic investigation (e.g., additional savings types or measures, new concept valuations, etc.)

  • Utilize applicable data/analytical tools to extract and analyze data (e.g., SAS, SQL, Excel, Tableau)

  • Compile and disseminate results of data analyses (e.g., data displays, PowerPoint decks) to leadership, stakeholders and clients

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • ASA or FSA designation

  • 5 years of experience managing and providing work direction to a team

  • 2 years of experience working in a matrix and highly adaptive environment handling tight deadlines

  • Financial planning and analysis experience

  • Intermediate level of data modeling and analytics experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MBA in Finance, Accounting, Marketing or Information System

  • Experience working in the health care industry
