Job Summary and Responsibilities/Duties

Provides holistic learning strategies, mentoring, and retention support for students under the day-to-day guidance of the AVID Coordinator. Works with the AVID Coordinator, content area instructor, and other College staff to assess student needs and to develop and implement customized learning interventions for individuals and small groups.
Essential Duties:
Provides learning strategies, academic coaching, content tutoring, and support to students in target areas such as organization, inquiry, reading to learn, and collaboration using a welcoming, strengths-based approach, individually and/or in small groups. Provides student contact by appointment or drop-in via phone, email, video chat, or in-person in the learning center, lab, classroom, or other setting as appropriate.
Assesses student needs via AVID assessment tools, learning skills assessment tools, and evidence of current student class work.
Connects students to campus resources and programming that will positively affect their persistence and retention at MHCC. Refers students with non-academic support needs to other campus resources.
Collaborates with the AVID Coordinator to develop customized learning interventions for students, including content area and learning skills support. Supports integration of learning skills and AVID strategies into content curriculum and student routines.
Creates and manages case notes documenting student interactions and plan of assistance. Reviews and responds to received case notes.
Attends content area and college and academic success strategies courses or workshops as assigned; attends campus events to promote services to students, make connections with students and faculty, and familiarize self with target curricula.
Maintains awareness of student progress in courses and AVID Program; maintains records of student progress and content of sessions; communicates regularly with content area faculty and tutors about course curriculum and student progress.
Assists with planning and facilitation of workshops for students and employees such as Bridge Programming or learning community events.
Participates in the advertisement and promotion of tutoring services, peer academic mentoring, and overall AVID|LSC services and supports. May assist with orienting students to services, creating marketing materials, creating learning videos, and posting to social media.
Attends in-service and/or executive staff, department, and division meetings as directed by manager.
Additional Duties:
Assists with and conducts outreach for AVID Program on campus and at secondary institutions
Provides direction and guidance to student employees in the department as needed.
Participates in professional development activities as requested.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum and Desired Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in education, mathematics, science, social science, humanities, English as a second language (ESL), English language learning (ELL), teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), special education, or related field
Experience/Training:
Minimum (1) year of experience supporting learning within an educational environment
Experience working with historically underserved and culturally diverse populations
Experience using Socratic tutoring methods
Basic skills using Microsoft Office and/or O365 applications
Experience using video conferencing software
Desired Qualifications:
Significant coursework in science, social science, special education, ESL, ELL, or TESOL
Experience teaching, tutoring, or academic coaching at the secondary or post-secondary level
Experience working with adult and/or secondary learners
Experience with the AVID Program at the secondary or post-secondary level
Bilingual skills in Spanish, Vietnamese, or Russian.

Working Conditions and Important Information
Working Conditions:
Work is typically performed in a normal office environment with exposure to a potentially emotional and stressful environment when resolving interpersonal conflict and providing student support. Work is often performed at a computer terminal with normal risks of visual eye strain and repetitive hand/wrist motion for data entry and keyboarding functions. Work is completed within designated areas on the Gresham campus and, as appropriate and needed at scheduled hours, from home (remote online support).
SALARY
Salary placement will be based on applicable education and/or years of relevant equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement. Please include all relevant education and full and part-time experience in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement. Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past education and/or experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.
Part-time Tutors are paid based on accumulated work hours according to the salary schedule below; all new employees will start at level 1.
