Job Overview:

This position is located at Central Land Office and is a critical piece of the Area Aviation Unit. This position has primary responsibilities of transporting bulk Jet A fuel by truck and dispensing it into DNRC's MT205 helicopters in support of wildland fires.

This position also provides a leadership component needed to ensure a safe and effective Aviation Unit is provided for the Northwestern Land Office. Work assignments require cooperation and coordination with County, State, and Federal agencies, the general public, permanent and seasonal employees, and private contractors. The position assists with seasonal activities related to wildland fire suppression, the maintenance of buildings, grounds, and vehicles, and fire-related projects of the Aviation Unit.

One priority for the Area is our cooperator relationships, therefore the SWLO Fuel Truck Driver will help build and maintain relationships with the adjoining DNRC Areas, surrounding National Forests and other federal agencies, and surrounding counties. This position assists with County Co-Op and Land Office helicopter related training to ensure safe aircraft fueling is performed. Consequently, the Fuel Truck Driver will provide input in developing aviation safety plans, tracking vehicle maintenance schedules and be proficient with DNRC 1500 manual fueling procedures, DOT driving regulations, and general aviation safety procedures.

This position reports directly to the Area Aviation Officer.

This position provides refueling support for State Helicopter Operations. Fuel truck driver will utilize two-way radios to receive requests for and provide fuel for helicopter operations; maintains records of all fueling systems to fuel tank, pump, filtering system, hoses, and bonding cables to assure safe operations; perform other tasks as assigned during the non-fire season duration of the appointment.

Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities):

  • Fuel Truck Driver / Fuel Truck operations and routine maintenance. This will include safe operation of fuel truck within established MT-DOT and MT- DNRC policies and daily truck inspections (check fluid levels, lights, etc). This will also include navigation to and from incidents across the state while maintaining positive communication with the assigned Helicopter.

    Fuel truck drivers will be tasked with keeping track of all fuel receipts (diesel and Jet-A), making sure they are stored in the appropriate manner. If deficiencies are found, it is the Fuel Truck Driver's obligation to notify the appropriate supervisors.

  • Fuel System Operations and routine maintenance. Fuel truck driver will be tasked with safely fueling the helicopter in the field and at the hanger.

    It is the fuel truck driver's obligation to follow pre-set protocols for safe aircraft fueling. Fuel truck driver will also do daily inspections on the entire Jet A fueling systems, as well as daily inspections of the Jet-A itself. All inspections must be documented and stored in the appropriate place.

    It will be up to the Fuel Truck Driver to ensure this is being completed. If deficiencies are found, it is the Fuel Truck Driver's obligation to notify the appropriate chains.

  • Helispot coordination. When no management is present, the fuel truck driver may be asked to find an appropriate helicopter landing area (helispot). Marking hazards, marking the touchdown pad, and marking the wind will be critical aspects to helispot coordination.

    Keeping a clear and clean helispot will be the responsibility of the Fuel Truck Driver in the absence of the Helicopter Manager or Aviation Supervisor. Fuel Truck Driver will also be asked to be the point of contact from the helispot to the helicopter.

  • Training. The Fuel Truck Driver will be tasked with training on the operations of the fueling systems incase of an emergency.

    All resources working within our program will undergo a safety briefing for the Fuel Truck. This briefing will be the responsibility of the Fuel Truck Driver.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

List the knowledge, skills and abilities (behaviors) typically required for the first day of work. You may also list preferred knowledge, skills and abilities.

Fuel truck drivers will need to have at a minimum Class B Commercial Driver's License with a Hazardous Material, air brakes, and tanker endorsements. Fuel truck driver must also obtain a CDL medical card and maintain this card during employment.

Fuel truck driver must be able and available to work extended hours and weekends. Periodic travel, within the state, that could last up to 14 days should be expected. Fuel Truck Driver must have considerable knowledge in truck operations, fueling systems, map reading, 2-way radio, and GPS applications.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

The position requires education and experience equivalent to High School Diploma and 1 to 2 years of relevant work experience.

Physical and Environmental Demands:

List physical aspects of the job, including frequency and duration, and environmental factors an incumbent can expect in this position. You may also access the State of Montana Safety Program, the Return to Work Program, and other Resources

The Fuel Truck Driver will need to pass a physical fitness test (Light Test) within 3 weeks of hiring. This test will consist of a 1-mile walk.

To pass the test, you must complete that walk in 16 minutes or less. Fuel Truck drivers can expect be on their feet for multiple hours at a time. Fuel truck drivers will need to be able to lift heavy objects (50 lbs. or more) for long durations during the day. Fuel truck drivers may assist on loading and unloading of the helicopters' gear; this includes chainsaws, line gear, buckets, foam buckets, etc.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:

Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. A valid driver's license is required with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent completed 36 months.

ELIGIBILITY TO WORK:

In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act, the person selected must produce within three days of hire documents that show authorization to work in the United States. Examples of such documentation include a birth certificate or Social Security card along with a driver's license or other picture I.D., or a U.S. passport, or a "green card".
