The Auxiliary Operator reports to, and takes direction from, the Control Room Operator on his shift. The Auxiliary Operator assists in the proper start-up, operation, and shutdown of the boiler, steam turbine generator, related auxiliaries, and balance of plant equipment from outside the control room. During his shift, the Auxiliary Operator also tours designated areas in the plant to inspect equipment and record operating parameters. The Auxiliary Operator fosters a team spirit by staying involved with Solar Field Department activities. The Auxiliary Operator also performs any other tasks or assignments delegated by the Plant Manager or as determined by the needs of the company.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform safe and efficient operation of the boiler, steam turbine generator, related auxiliaries, and balance of plant systems from outside the control room.

  • Perform start-up, operation, and shutdown of equipment, systems, and the plant in accordance with approved plant procedures and as directed by the Control Room Operator.

  • Monitor and record local operating parameters and make adjustments to maintain safe and efficient operation.

  • Upon detecting faulty equipment operation, report the situation to the Control Room Operator and assist in diagnosing the cause. As directed, take proper action to restore the equipment and plant to a safe condition.

  • Monitor plant air and water emissions from outside the control room and take steps to maintain within acceptable limits. Immediately notify Control Room Operator of abnormal situations.

  • Take direction from the Control Room Operator for plant and system start-up, operation, shutdown, and respond to abnormal situations from outside the control room.

  • Provide periodic reports to the Control Room Operator regarding plant status.

  • Observe, report, troubleshoot, and correct situations that are likely to develop into operational problems or safety hazards.

  • Report and respond to chemical spills and leaks in accordance with plant emergency response plans.

  • Monitor and operate equipment circuit breakers and switches as directed by the Control Room Operator for safe and efficient operation of the plant. This includes opening, locking, and tagging for isolation and maintenance.

  • Obtain thorough turnover from Auxiliary Operator being relieved, including special orders and unusual operating conditions. Review operating logs and inspect plant equipment, controls, and indications.

  • Give thorough turnover to the relieving Auxiliary Operator for special orders and unusual operating conditions.

  • As directed by the Control Room Operator, perform periodic tests on critical plant systems and equipment including lube oil pumps, turbine valves, turbine system trips, and boiler trips.

  • Test and operate plant fire and chemical safety equipment as directed.

  • As authorized by the Control Room Operator, perform equipment isolation in accordance with plant lockout/tagout procedures.

  • Maintain work area in a clean, orderly condition.

  • Report all maintenance activities to the Control Room Operator.

  • Participate in scheduled safety meetings and training.

  • Replace overhead lighting as required.

  • Perform minor maintenance as directed during scheduled and unscheduled maintenance periods.

  • Safely operate vehicles on-site as required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Control Room Operator and Shift Supervisor.

JOB REQUIREMENTS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills)

  • 12 years formal education (High School Graduate).

  • Experience in boiler start-up, operation, and shutdown from outside the control room.

  • Experience in steam turbine generator start-up, operation, and shutdown from outside the control room.

  • Experience in Balance of Plant systems start-up, operation, and shutdown from outside the control room.

  • Thorough knowledge of equipment isolation and tagging procedures.

  • Experience responding to plant abnormal situations, alarms, and emergencies.

  • Thorough knowledge of the location, purpose and proper use of the plant safety equipment.

  • Experience aligning, switching, isolating, and paralleling electrical equipment and systems under the direction of the Control Room Operator.

  • Experience using basic hand tools.

  • Experience performing basic plant maintenance.

  • Experience in the use of personal computers and numerous software applications such as Excel, Word, MS Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, etc.

  • Knowledge of reading and interpreting P&IDs, and electrical one-line, schematic, and logic diagrams.

  • Knowledge of basic instrumentation and control concepts.

  • Knowledge of electrical theory and how it is applied in a power plant environment.

  • Knowledge of first aid and CPR.

  • Knowledge of arithmetic functions; addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, algebra, and geometry.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to communicate in English, orally and in writing.

  • Knowledge of reading and interpreting P&IDs, and electrical one-line, schematic, and logic diagrams.

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the basic principles of physics, chemistry, thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and combustion.

  • Knowledge of basic instrumentation and control concepts.

  • Knowledge of electrical theory and how it is applied in a power plant environment.

  • Knowledge of plant hazards and approaches to protecting both personnel and equipment.

  • Knowledge of corporate and plant policies and regulations.

  • Knowledge of plant environmental regulations and compliance requirements.

  • Knowledge of fire and accident prevention techniques and methods of responding to fire and accidents in the plant.

  • Knowledge of first aid and CPR.

  • Knowledge of the flowpaths, operating theory, requirements, and limitations of the boiler, steam turbine generator, auxiliaries, and all balance of plant systems and equipment.

  • Knowledge of plant water treatment systems operating theory, requirements, and limitations including chemical feed equipment, demineralization system, water pretreatment equipment, and water quality control system.

  • Knowledge of the principles of equipment lubrication.

  • Knowledge of the operation and limitations on pumps, fans, conveyors, compressors, heat transfer equipment, piping components.

  • Knowledge of equipment, system, and plant protective schemes, sequence of operation and response to abnormal conditions.

  • Ability to interpret, diagnose, and respond to plant emergencies.

  • Knowledge of air and water quality requirements, and the associated emissions monitoring equipment.

  • Knowledge of factors affecting plant emissions (air, water, and noise).

  • Skilled in using technical manuals, manufacturer's instructions and procedures.

  • Skilled in basic plant maintenance activities.
