Job Responsibilities

  • Conducts vehicle inspections for mechanical services

  • Perform automotive repairs

  • Perform schedule maintenance services on vehicles

  • Perform tire installations and repairs

  • Assist in receiving and stocking inventory

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Automotive Repair Experience

  • Tire and Lube Technician Experience

  • Ability to work a flexible retail schedule including weekends, evenings and holidays

  • Valid Driver's License

  • Criminal Background Check

  • Pre-employment Drug Screen

  • Must be 18 years or older

Independent judgment concerning work methods and procedures is required, but the work is subject to inspection during process and upon completion for quality and conformity with requirements. Supervision may be exercised over one or more assistants of a lesser grade. CERTIFICATE LICENSE: Possession of a valid State of Maryland noncommercial class C driver's license, or equivalent. Ability to secure and maintain or secure and maintain a State of Maryland commercial Class B driver's license or equivalent, with air brake, passenger, and school bus endorsements within six (6) months of employment required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Completion of the written MCPS Automotive Technician I test and MCPS hands-on skills assessment. Knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of truck, bus and automotive equipment. Knowledge of the standard practices, tools, and equipment of the truck, bus, and automotive mechanic trades; knowledge of the operation of internal combustion engines, ignition and of other systems; knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, on-board computer systems, air brake systems and automatic transmissions. Must have the ability to learn and operate technical test equipment and proper test procedures for individual systems. Ability to locate, diagnose, and repair malfunctions and to test repaired equipment. Ability to supervise assistants and to work effectively with others. Skill in the use and care of equipment and tools used in the automotive repair work. Knowledge of the construction, assembly, adjustment, and maintenance of truck, bus, and automotive body repair equipment and working knowledge of the standard practices, tools, methods, and equipment used in the repair and painting of automotive bodies. Ability to diagnose structural defects, provide damage estimates, and make proper adjustments and body repairs to a wide variety of truck, bus, and automotive equipment. Considerable skill in the application of methods and techniques used in the truck, bus, and automotive body repair mechanic craft and in the use and care of pertinent tools, equipment, and facilities. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).. EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE: High School diploma or a high school equivalency certificate required. Knowledge of and have performed satisfactorily the duties of a Garage Mechanic or related field for a period of not less than four (4) years. Current ASE certification in one field (Transit Bus, Automotive, Medium/Heavy Truck or School Bus) desirable or for grandfathered employees, pass the required type and number of internal tests. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. MCPS reserves its sole and exclusive right to substitute any of the above test/certification requirements including, but no limited to, changes to other providers.
