  • What Youll Do*

If you enjoy being under the car or under the hood, this gig will have you on top of the world, baby. Well look to you to care for cars and tend to trucks, from bumper to bumper. But theres more to it than that. Heres a list of some of the main responsibilities for this starring role as an auto tech titan:

  • Responsibilities:

Perform preventive maintenance: change oil, oil filter, fuel filter,
transmission flush, and inspect vehicle for mechanical flaws.

Perform diesel and transmission repairs.

Depending upon certification levels, perform various repairs and
maintenance which may include (you ready for this list?): OBD II systems,
brake components, tires, tune-ups, suspension components, aerial lifts,
electrical systems, state safety Inspections, interior/exterior components,
engine and drive line components, etc.

May repair and maintain shop equipment.

Know and follow all safety procedures.

Create and maintain vehicle history and maintenance records. May up fit
vehicles with necessary equipment.

Troubleshoot and repair complex hydraulic systems, generators, and
electrical systems, hybrids, and on-board computer systems on
specialized trucks.

Provides custom equipment when needed by engaging in equipment
design and moderate fabrication tasks including welding.

Assures prompt repairs by working with vendors for parts and repairs.

May perform roadside assistance as needed.

Youre a torque wrench-wielding surgeon for everything on four wheels. The idea of a big repair is an exciting challenge to you, and you love nothing more than rolling up your sleeves and bringing cars and trucks back to glorious, asphalt-hugging life. With five-plus years of service work under your belt, youve got a knack for everything from electrical to fabrication work, and your own track record on the road is rock solid. Youre also comfortable with certain discomforts, such as the crazy positions that auto tech work sometimes requires, along with the all-weather conditions that come from working outdoors.

  • Qualifications:
  • Minimum:*

High school diploma or GED (or 5+ years of related work experience
servicing vehicles instead of the degree).

Valid drivers license and safe driving record.

Ability to drive standard and automatic transmission vehicles.

5+ years automotive service and repair experience.

Diesel and transmission experience.

  • Preferred:*

Medium/heavy truck, booms/hydraulics, electrical, complex repairs, design,
and fabrication experience.

One year of customer service experience.

Valid drivers license and safe driving record.

Some A.S.E. Automotive or Truck certification or other related

Continue training to maintain current A.S.E. status and to meet with
technology and fleet changes as they occur.

  • Physical requirements:*

Frequently required to stand, walk, reach, talk, hear, stoop, bend, kneel,
crouch, squat, climb, and tolerate excess noise levels, car exhaust and
outdoor weather.

Vision requirements: close, distance and color vision, depth perception and
ability to adjust focus.

Performs rebuilds on engines, drive trains or components or equipment. Provides training for personnel on the safe use of the above equipment. * Performs on-site maintenance and repair to equipment in field, as required. * In field camps, works as Equipment Operator as required, including, but not limited to: grooming the skiway and loading/unloading aircraft. Trains camp staff on proper equipment and vehicle usage. Contributes to field camp end of season report, as required. Required to perform a variety of tasks, such as shoveling, cargo organization and movement, and fueling aircraft, vehicles and buildings. * Maintains detailed records on all work performed and completes work orders. * Operates and maintains equipment including: compressors, presses, air tools, electric power tools, fork lifts, grooming equipment, etc. * Assists MEC Shop Foreman/Camp Manager with daily operations. In field camps may be required to assist the heavy equipment technician with taskings. * Maintains a clean, orderly and safe work area. * Performs duties in support of metrics (as provided by the supervisor). * Supports the achievement of ASC metrics, whether they can be directly or indirectly, effected by job duties. * Complies with all ASC Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Provides documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation. * Works to achieve ASC goals and contractual commitments. * Maintains workplace program and ensures safety is the highest priority in the work place. * Performs other duties as required. REQUIREMENTS: * High School diploma or equivalent. * Two years training at a technical school is preferred. * A valid Driver's license is required. * Wilderness First Responder Certification is preferred. * A minimum of seven years' experience in maintenance and repair of diesel and gasoline small engines and generators is required. * A minimum of one season experience working on small engines and generators in Antarctica is preferred. * Experience in snowmobile or ATV maintenance and repair and/or maintenance of tracked vehicles such as Tucker Sno-Cats and Pisten Bullys is preferred. * Previous cold weather experience is preferred. * Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required. * Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum. * Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors. * Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica. * Must participate in community programs, such as "house-mouse" (chores), "daisy-picking" (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.
