College and Division:

The Automotive Service Technology Department resides in the Technology Applied Science and Public Services Division. As a division, we are one of four Instructional and Student Support divisions at CCC. The four divisions are: Academic Foundations and Connections (AFAC), Arts and Sciences (A &S), Institutional Effectiveness and Planning (IEP) and Technology, Applied Science and Public Services (TAPS). The Technology Applied Science and Public Services Division includes ten departments: Customized Training and Development Services, Small Business Development Center, Workforce Development Services, Community Education, TAPS Grants & Career Pathways, Automotive & Welding Technology, Industrial Technology, Education, Early Childhood Education, Human Services & Criminal Justice, Health Sciences and Apprenticeship, Wildland Fire, Emergency Management & Geographic Information System.

Automotive Service Technology Department:

The Automotive Service Technology Department is an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) accredited program that provides hands-on instruction and training from faculty members with years of experience in the field. Students learn how to repair and maintain passenger cars and light trucks, participate in cooperative work experience opportunities, and attain the skills lead to successful employment in the automotive industry.

A successful candidate will be a collaborative, innovative, and participatory faculty member with an expertise in the automotive industry who is excited to teach, support and mentor students.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Instructors shall be responsible for imparting knowledge and developing skills through the instructional process under the direction of the department, the division and the College Administration. In carrying out their responsibilities, instructors shall exercise independent judgment based on adequate knowledge of subject matter, professional goals of subjects taught, teaching strategies, interpersonal relationships, and best practices of teaching and learning.

Instruction & Related Assignments:

  • Teaches a variety of automotive technology classes (lecture and lab) to a diverse student population

  • Develops and revises curricula, assessments and course materials for Automotive Service Technology courses

  • Ability to operate typical automotive machinery and complete training for new equipment as necessary.

  • Works any shift as is required to meet student demand. This may include mornings, afternoons, and evenings with the possibility of some weekends.

  • Teaches classes as assigned, following approved course outlines

  • Delivers instruction in a variety of modalities to meet program and student needs including face-to-face, remote, hybrid, and/or online

  • Prepares and develops materials for assigned classes

  • Posts and maintains student office hours

  • Provides students with course syllabi

  • Maintains records of grades and attendance; reports individual academic grades when required

  • Participates in assessment activities

  • Maintains work areas in a manner that meets an automotive shop standard of excellence

  • Participates in professional development activities to remain current in the assigned discipline

  • Acts as a liaison to industry and to local high school teachers/students. Be involved with the college community, committee service and advisory committee meetings

  • Works harmoniously and collaboratively with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching learning, and service to a diverse student population.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of five (5) years of practical work experience in a commercial automotive service repair facility, plus specialized training or experience. Specialized training may include, but is not limited to, licensed apprenticeship programs, community college associate degree programs, and/or other professionally certified or licensed training.

Certifications:

  • Possession of all 8 Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications, or a minimum of 6 ASEs with the commitment to complete the remaining certifications by the end of probation. Full-time faculty are reimbursed for costs associated with achieving and maintaining ASE certifications.

  • All instructors must hold the following ASE certifications prior to employment: 1.G1 Maintenance & Light Repair and 2.A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems

  • All instructors must hold the following ASE certifications prior to teaching engine performance courses: 1.A8 Engine Performance and 2.L1 Advanced Engine

  • Performance SpecialistInstructors teaching Hybrid/Electric vehicle diagnosis and repair should be certified in L3-Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicles

Physical Demands of the Position:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility, including the use of step stools in order to retrieve archived materials. Duties may involve moving materials weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis such as papers, files, boxes, equipment, computers, etc., and rarely requires moving materials weighing over 25 pounds. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, monitor, projector, calculator, printer, and standard office equipment.

Working Conditions:

Working in shop areas with exposure to various automotive fumes and fluids. Both classroom and shop conditions, some noise, smells, and obstruction hazards and requiring continuous use of personal protective equipment, i.e., safety glasses, gloves, skin protection, and hearing protection. Position may have minimal responsibility for driving.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervision of other personnel is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel and may assign work to student workers. When a lab tech has been assigned to aid in lab sessions, then the responsibility would be to determine how to best use the help in setting up and/or running demonstrations, aiding students with projects, and controlling the lab to promote a safe working environment.

Supervision Received:

Works under the general direction of the Dean of Technology, Applied Science and Public Services.

Additional Information:

The successful candidate in this position will work a 10-month contract and be paid for 175 days including six (6) paid holidays, per the Full-Time Faculty Bargaining Agreement.

Starting Salary Expectations:

Initial Salary Placement will be Step 3 ($77,041 annually) per the CCC Full-time Faculty bargaining agreement.

A portion of the 6% will be diverted to The Employee Pension Stability Account as mandated by Senate Bill 1049. CCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.
  • CCC provides a tuition waiver for courses offered at CCC for yourself, domestic partner, and IRS dependents; plus partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions.
  • CCC qualifies as a public employer under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

Terms of Employment:

  • All positions at CCC are required to be available for work onsite as requested by the college.

  • Requires flexible work schedule to meet program needs, which may include evenings and/or weekends.

  • Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials from a regionally accredited institution, or the equivalent, as recognized by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) or National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).

  • Your official transcripts will need to be sent from the Registrar of your degree granting institution within 30-days of your hire.

  • Employees must maintain metro Portland, Oregon or Vancouver, Washington residency as a condition of employment.

  • CCC does not support work visas.
