Diagnose and repair to specifications " brake and hydraulic, exhaust, primary and/or advanced fuel ignition and electrical, suspension and alignment, air conditioning and computer systems

Adequately explain technical diagnoses and needed repairs to non-mechanical individuals

Stay current with rapidly changing automotive technology through continuous paid formal training

Assist fellow technicians/mechanics in performing technical activities

Other duties as assigned

  • Reading, writing and math skills

  • Must have a valid automobile drivers license at all times and be able to drive customer and company vehicles.

  • Must have a minimum 3 years of automotive repair experience, completion of Vocational-Technical School program in a related field or demonstrated skills via third party certificates/assessment.

  • A.S.E. certification in at least 3 (three) of A1-A8 is required. (New hires with external similar qualifications/certifications will have up to 2 years of employment to comply)

  • Maintains Federal, State and Local certification/license where applicable.

  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical people

Scope of the Position: We are offering a unique job opportunity to conduct research in an exciting field of next-generation communications systems! This job provides a wide range of opportunities to invent and bring to realization next-generation optical fiber connectivity technologies for hyperscale datacenters and access networks. The successful candidate will work closely with teams of outstanding Research Scientists and Engineers located at our historical state-of-art research center in Corning, NY, as well as other global locations. The successful candidate will drive research focusing on ultra-high fiber count connectors, including device design, process development, testing and prototyping. Additional research areas include automation of multi-fiber connectors and design of micro-optics systems. The candidate is expected to function as a key subject matter expert in precision opto-mechanical engineering and precision process development for connectivity solutions. Day to Day Responsibilities: * Invent new precision connectivity devices and process concepts for novel pre-terminated optical cable assembly solutions. * Model and analyze device concepts, generate design specifications. * Develop novel process and equipment to enable new connectivity devices. * Develop functional prototypes in rapid iterations to optimize the connectivity devices. * Document results in internal reports, external publications, and patent applications. * Collaborate with teams across Research, Development and Business organizations. Drive technology transfer to downstream receivers within Corning. Hours of work/work schedule: Minimum 30 hours/week, Flex time is supported Travel requirements: None Education: Ph.D degree in mechanical engineering or other related engineering or science degree. Required Experience: 15 years of work experience or equivalent in fiber optics industry. Proven track record of commercialized high impact innovations. Required Skills: * Strong background in optical fiber, cables, and connectivity technologies. Deep understanding of single mode fiber coupling and tolerances. * Direct hands-on laboratory experience in designing, implementing, and testing complex optical connectivity devices. * Proficient in 3D CAD modeling tools such as SolidWorks or ProEngineer. Strong analytical and modeling skills using finite element analysis (FEA) tools. * Deep understanding of precision design and fabrication technologies. * Deep understanding of optical fiber reliability, bend loss, and test methods. * Rapid development of prototypes to verify or refute early stage concepts. * Proven track record of inventing and transferring early stage fiber optic connectivity technologies to downstream organizations. Desired Skills: * Knowledge of precision injection molding and 3D printing. * Familiar with automation equipment such as motion systems and robotics. * Understanding of material properties and adhesives. * Image acquisition and processing. * Motion control and data acquisition using Labview, C/C++, Arduino, or equivalent.
