Under limited supervision performs work of moderate to considerable difficulty in mechanical, electrical and welding/fabricating work in the maintenance and repairs of all types of automotive vehicles; performs related work as assigned.

Typical Duties

LEVEL II - MECHANIC

TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Performs the duties of Level I

  • Performs mechanical work on vehicles

  • Diagnoses and completes repairs that require mechanical knowledge and skill including repairs on major systems

  • Prepares vehicles and equipment for initial service and auction

  • Completes preventative maintenance service on vehicles and equipment

  • Proficient in utilizing the automated Maintenance Management System (RTA) including ordering parts and entering labor times and notes

LEVEL III - MECHANIC

TYPICAL DUTIES:(Illustrative only)

  • Performs the duties of Level I and Level II

  • Performs maintenance tasks in Light Equipment areas requiring advanced mechanical knowledge and skill, including repairs on three major systems such as engine, transmission, power train, hydraulic or undercarriage systems and their components

  • Diagnoses and completes major repairs in areas that require mechanical knowledge and skill including repairs on major systems and its components

  • Performs emergency road repair/service to vehicles outside of the maintenance facilities.

  • Performs proficient fabrication and electric welding as required

LEVEL IV SENIOR MECHANIC

TYPICAL DUTIES:(Illustrative only)

  • Performs the duties of Level I through Level III

  • Performs maintenance tasks in Light Equipment areas requiring advanced mechanical knowledge and skill, including repairs on three major systems such as engine, transmission, power train, hydraulic or undercarriage systems and their components

  • Diagnoses and completes major repairs in Light Equipment areas that require mechanical knowledge and skill including repairs on major systems and its components

  • Performs emergency road repair/service to trucks and heavy road construction equipment outside of the maintenance facilities.

  • Performs proficient fabrication and electric welding as required

  • Serves as a lead worker over all other mechanics as required

  • Provides maintenance-related training to all other mechanics

  • May provide input with respect to training and performance evaluations of mechanics

Essential functions of this position include: driving; walking, reaching and twisting to access work; climbing on vehicle to work; working with and around other co-workers; color vision; vision acuity (near) for wiring; communicating with supervisors and co-workers; finger dexterity for component assembly and operation of tools. Environmental conditions include: noise from grinders, tools, compressor, etc; hazards (mechanical) from wheel mounting, truck parts, etc; atmospheric conditions (dust) from dirt and cinders.

Minimum Qualifications

LEVEL II - MECHANIC APPRENTICE

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two years of related experience such as mechanical and/or welding/fabrication and completed required trainings per department training plan OR, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a valid driver's license; if hired from out of state, must obtain an Arizona driver's license within 30 calendar days of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.

LEVEL III - MECHANIC

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Four years of in mechanical and/or welding/fabrication work experience , including work on electrical systems and computerized systems; OR, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a valid driver's license; if hired from out of state, must obtain an Arizona driver's license within 30 calendar days of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.

Must have completed and maintained two Supervisor and Fleet Manager approved ASE Certifications.

LEVEL IV SENIOR MECHANIC

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Six years of mechanical and/or welding/fabrication experience, including work on electrical systems and computerized systems; OR, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a valid driver's license; if hired from out of state, must obtain an Arizona driver's license within 30 calendar days of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.

Must have completed required trainings per department training plan. Must have completed and maintained two additional Supervisor and Fleet Manager approved ASE Certifications for a total of four ASE Certifications.

Theideal candidate is an experienced automotive technician who is driven to learn, works well on a team, and will uphold the mission of the Public Works department.

ALL LEVELS:

Positions are non-exempt from overtime

Positions are safety sensitive

Requires working various 12-hour snow shifts on "On-call" basis

May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs

Responds to emergency situations

Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances

TOOL ALLOWANCE:$1,000 annual

AUTOMOTIVE SERVICES EXCELLENCE (ASE) Certification Incentive Program - applicable to Mechanic Level II through Level IV

Certifications A1 through A-9

Requires the approval of Supervisor and Fleet Manager

ASE Certification testing fees are the responsibility of the employee

Reimbursement of testing fee(s) provided with documentation of passing/certification

Earn $.20 per hour wage increase for eight ASE Certification completed (A1 through A9)

Earn additional $.40 per hour as a one-time wage increase for completing every four ASE Certifications

Certification must be maintained, if certification is lost hourly rate will be reduce

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Working knowledge of:

  • Inspection and servicing of vehicles and equipment

  • Diagnosing mechanical problems and performing minor repairs

  • Operational safety regulations and procedures

Skill in:

  • Use of power and hand tools

  • Use of diagnostic equipment

  • Use of specialized equipment including tire repair and balancing machines and diagnostic equipment

Ability to:

  • Work varying shifts, weekends, and holidays

  • Effectively handle lifting of various objects weighing up to 60 pounds

  • Work extended hours in a variety of weather conditions

  • Prepare and maintain records and reports

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public

  • Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety

  • Follow written and oral instructions

  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
