Position Description
This position announcement will be used to fill a full-time, permanent, safety sensitive Automotive Maintenance Manager position in The Office of Central Services with Anne Arundel County Government.
This is responsible technical and supervisory work in directing the repair and maintenance of automotive and other motor equipment.
Nature and Variety of Work
Work involves responsibility for the efficient repair and maintenance of automotive, heavy road equipment, and related machines by managing a county garage. Work includes supervising a number of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled personnel and maintaining appropriate records and reports. Assignments are received in the form of work requests or reports on defective operation of equipment; the incumbent is responsible for scheduling workflow through the shop and seeing it through to completion. Work is performed with considerable technical independence but within the framework of established administrative policies and procedures. Work is subject to review through the evaluation of complaints and comments of departments and personnel receiving service.
Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Manages a county garage; plans, organizes, assigns, and schedules repair and maintenance work for automobiles, trucks, heavy road equipment, firefighting equipment, and related equipment; diagnoses defects in equipment.
Inspects and tests some of the completed jobs; reviews labor and materials costs; writes specifications for purchase of equipment; reviews and checks for conformance to specifications in equipment purchased.
Trains and instructs personnel in shop work practices and procedures; keeps necessary personnel and equipment records; establishes equipment maintenance operating and related records.
Inspects damaged vehicles; initiates action to obtain accident reports, repair estimates, repair the damage and prepare necessary reports.
Identifies equipment and materials that meet the criteria for sale or disposal; takes action to comply with established procedures.
Establishes shop operating policies and procedures; recommends improvements in services and administrative procedures to superiors.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade.
Thorough knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel driven equipment, and of mechanical repair methods applicable to heavy trucks, construction, and maintenance equipment.
Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and proper safety precautions during the use and disposal of hazardous materials.
Considerable knowledge of electronic testing equipment and computerized instrumentation.
Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and supervise the work of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled automotive maintenance and repair personnel.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to recognize skills deficiencies in employees and recommend appropriate training.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, departmental officials, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
(Note: This is a safety sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and alcohol testing.)
Graduation from high school or vocational school
Two (2) or more years of experience of progressive responsibility in the maintenance and repair of automotive, heavy road, and specialized equipment, including two (2) or more years of experience in a supervisory capacity
Valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license
