Job Summary: This position is responsible for performing repair work, routine maintenance, and servicing a variety of City vehicles and equipment. This position will also assist with building maintenance as needed.
Performs skilled automotive mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and auxiliary equipment with electronic components;
Inspects, tests, adjusts, repairs, and replaces complete or integral parts of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, etc.;
Working on various projects assigned by the manager. This includes but is not limited to welding, fabricating, metal cutting, and some carpentry;
Performs routine maintenance such as brake, tire, oil, filters, and fluid replacement;
Diagnosing engines and components with computer/ scanner equipment;
Must be knowledgeable about reading and repairing vehicles by computer diagnostics and flow charts;
Responsible for maintaining paperwork and records for each repair,
Responsible for maintaining inventory including relevant records.
Performs other related duties as required. This will include light building maintenance and repair as determined by Maintenance Manager.
Knowledge Required by the Position:
Knowledge of the principles governing the operation and maintenance of internal combustion engines;
Knowledge of the tools, equipment and technology used in the repair and maintenance of automotive and related equipment;
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the automotive repair trade;
Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials of the mechanical trade;
Skill in repairing defects in a wide variety of automotive equipment;
Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic failures;
Ability to adapt successfully to the wide range of equipment repaired in the shop;
Ability to learn how to safely operate gas and arc welding equipment to fabricate parts or mounting equipment;
Ability to learn new technology and terminology of modern automotive equipment;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers and other City employees;
Ability to keep shop inventory, tools, and building organized.
Ability to obtain Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Work Environment: Most repair work is completed in a shop; on occasion, equipment repairs are made in the field which may involve hazardous conditions. The work involves considerable physical activity with exposure to safety hazards normally associated with general vehicle and equipment repair.
High School diploma or equivalent; two (2) years of automotive mechanic experience; Vocational coursework in a related field preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
ASE Master Automotive Technician Certification will be required within two years of employment. The areas required are brakes, engine repair, transmissions (both manual and automatic), suspension and steering, electrical/electronic systems, heating and air conditioning systems, and engine performance.
Pay will be determined based on experience.
