Auto Equipment Maintenance Mechanic Street

Works under the supervision and direction of the Facilities Administrator, repairing and maintaining vehicles and equipment assigned to the Street and other city departments. Employee is responsible for daily maintenance of equipment, fabricating materials for repairs, and major and minor repairs to department vehicles.

• Responsible for the repair and maintenance of vehicles assigned to department in accordance with department, city, county, state, and federal guidelines and regulations.

• Inspect equipment to identify defects and diagnoses malfunctions using proper techniques, and testing analyzing equipment.

• Performs minor and major repairs to Street and other city department vehicles.

• Insures that shop is maintained in a clean, safe and orderly manner.

• Road test equipment to insure proper operating condition.

• Fabricates materials and make repairs that require welding.

• Works with Service Attendant as needed to insure the proper level of preventative maintenance is achieved on equipment.

• Maintains records and inventory of repairs and repair parts.

• May be asked to make recommendations and arrange for contract repair work.

• Provides road service for equipment out on road.

• Represents the Street Department and the city of Florence in a friendly, tactful, and courteous manner.

• Reports problems to the Facilities Administrator.

• This department may require employee to perform a variety of other assigned duties.

• Shifts may vary according to needs of city.

• Minimum of three years of experience in repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment with the city of Florence or related experience in field.

• High school graduate, GED certificate or experience in related field.

• Must have or obtain a valid Class A commercial driver's license/with air brake endorsement within six months of hire date.

• Must have or obtain an air conditioner technician certification within one year of hire date.

• Extensive knowledge of the mechanics of gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and other specialized equipment used in the department.

• Must have ability to rebuild gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, hydraulic systems, wiring systems, etc.

• Ability to trouble shoot and repair mechanical problems.

• Ability to learn Street Department rules and regulations.

• Knowledge of city of Florence streets.

• Knowledge to order parts and ability to verify quoted versus shipped price and specifications.

• Knowledge of traffic safety rules and regulations.

• Knowledge of safety rules and regulations that apply to working in and around vehicles and equipment.

• Ability to follow instructions and get along with fellow employees and customers.

• Thorough knowledge of preventative maintenance for vehicles assigned to department.

• Ability to read, write, and understand material related to repair and maintenance of vehicles.

Physical Demands:

• Ability to work under stressful situations.

• Ability to work with constant exposure to heat, cold, dampness, noise, vibration, and other disagreeable work conditions.

• Ability to stoop, bend, and lift on a regular basis up to 50 pounds (more on occasion).

• Ability to work in and around moving traffic.

Equipment Used: Mechanic tools including diagnostic equipment.
