Be part of a team that provides independent assessments and recommendations that help Arizona school districts become more accountable and efficient. Our school district performance audits have a strong financial component to them and meet the experience requirements for CPA certification. You will quickly gain broad experience auditing various areas of multiple districts each year. You may also be part of the team that produces the annual state-wide report analyzing school district spending at both the state and individual district levels or part of a team conducting special studies requested by the Legislature. Auditor I's and II's assist in conducting performance audits of school districts and special studies related to educational finance and operations. These audits provide the Legislature and the public with information on the use of public monies and identify best practices or make recommendations to the school districts to improve operations. The Division of School Audits conducts audits in accordance with generally accepted government auditing standards.

Starting Salary:

Depending on your experience, you could be hired as either a:

School District Auditor I:

$50,000 (Bachelor's degree)

$53,000 (Master's degree, CPA certification, or 150 qualifying credit hours)

School District Auditor II:

$53,800 (Bachelor's degree)

$56,800 (Master's degree, CPA certification, or 150 qualifying credit hours)


Applicant is required to have one of the following:

  • B.S. degree in Accounting, or the equivalent, with 24 completed semester hours of accounting and a minimum 3.0 GPA in accounting classes. Students within 6 months of graduation will also be considered.
  • A master's degree in a field emphasizing analytical skills, research, and organization of data.
  • A bachelor's degree in a field emphasizing analytical skills, research and organization of data, and at least 1 year of experience in performance auditing, program evaluation, financial auditing, or related experience.

In addition, candidates should possess the following:

  • Willingness to travel out of town during the week approximately 5 to 10 percent of the time.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Working knowledge of Windows, spreadsheets, and database software.

Position Auditor 3 Individual and Withholding Tax Education & Compliance Division 1600 W. Monroe Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85007 Job Summary This position will remain open until business needs are met. The Arizona Department of Revenue is currently seeking a motivated, innovative and solutions driven individual to work as our new Auditor 3. To conduct highly complex office and field audits of individual income tax and withholding tax using acceptable audit methods and procedures. Collects and analyzes data; plans and organizes audit procedures; examines and reviews records and financial records in order to prepare detailed reports on audit findings. Job Duties Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: * Conduct complex audits involving the accurate calculation and application of tax laws, rules and regulations, policies and procedures of the department in a consistent manner to all taxpayers. Accurate and timely examination of audits and determining and recomputing tax liabilities. Must fully document the audit to support the department's position and maintain the audit file in an orderly manner. * Research complicated issues and resolving taxpayer appeals timely, fairly, accurately and consistently. Explain audit adjustments and conclusions to taxpayers and their representatives. Discuss audit adjustments and positions with taxpayers and/or representatives. Review work of other auditors. Educate taxpayers in tax law, rules and regulations and ensure taxpayer compliance through the audit process. * Prepare work papers, audit reports and weekly reports. * Assist with on the job training of new auditors and ongoing training for audit staff. Answer questions, explain and interpret statutes and tax rulings. Advise and train for new policies and procedures as required. Actively promote teamwork and customer service within the section. Help to provide solutions to questions and/or problems, thinking creatively and proactively regarding new issues. Pre-Employment Requirements Valid driver's license.
