Report to Practice Manager. Performs delegated tasks to assist the Audiologist. Serves as a liaison between patients, physicians and internal/external customers. Facilitates scheduling and handling phone calls, patient check-in/check-out, and other medical office support duties.

Performs a variety of Audiology Technician duties by:

  • Performing hearing screenings for occupational accounts in accordance with OSHA.

  • Performing troubleshooting and minor repairs to hearing aids, ear molds, and other amplification devices (does not include programming devices).

  • Performing checks and cleaning on hearing aids and other amplification devices.

  • Instructing patients in proper use and care of hearing aids and other amplification devices.

  • Maintain patient records at all stages, including initial and subsequent evaluation and treatment activities.

  • Demonstrating the use of hearing protection as well as alerting and assistive listening devices.

  • Instructing patients in proper ear hygiene.

  • Performing non-diagnostic otoscopy.

  • Assist Audiologist in auditory rehabilitation programs as well as the set up and technical tasks.

  • Performing inventories of equipment and supplies.

  • Performing newborn hearing screenings and complete necessary documentation. May require travel to Elkhart General Hospital and/or Memorial Hospital.

  • Performing school hearing screenings. May require travel.

  • Prepping patients for ABR testing which may require travel to Elkhart Hospital and/or Memorial Hospital.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Greeting and escorting patients as well as answer incoming phone calls.

  • Completing other job related assignments and special projects as directed.

  • Scheduling patient appointments and ensuring that appointments are confirmed within 24 hours of appointment. Mailing or faxing patient instructions as assigned.

  • Verifying billing information at every visit and collect payments on account/co-payments.

  • Processing new referrals and investigating missing referral information and update patient record.

  • Contacting insurance companies to obtain authorization and hearing aid benefit information at least 2 days prior to the patient's appointment.

  • Monitoring and distributing faxes and scan audiology documents.

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.

  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.

  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.

  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.

  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.

  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.

  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.

  • Complies with established organization and department policies.

  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are acquired through the successful completion of a high school degree or equivalent. Previous experience in audiology or ENT department strongly preferred. Must pass audiology assistant competency examination.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Previous experience with hearing aids and listening devices preferred.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology.

  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills to be able to communicate effectively with patients, families, and other professionals as well as effective working relationships with a wide range of colleagues and vendors.

  • Must be proficient with computer and conventional software packages as well as hearing aid programming software.

  • Demonstrates strong organization skills, detail oriented and the ability to multi-task.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a medical office setting.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
