Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Chief of Primary Care Services or designee, administer diagnostic test to identify patients with hearing impairments and to determine the nature and extent of hearing disorders. Administer specialized measuring devices and tests for identification of hearing impairment of the hospital population, interpret and evaluate results.

Practices of audiology; diagnostics and measurement techniques applicable to the evaluation of hearing disorders; physical, physiological, and psychological basis of hearing impairment. Provide individual and group habilitative and rehabilitative services. Prepare reports and summaries on diagnosis, prognosis, progress, and recommendations for assigned cases.

Confer with other disciplines, principles and family regarding patients progress and treatment, update manual; maintain appropriate records and quality assurance for patients receiving audiology services. The Audiologist will train unit staff in therapeutic procedures and methods of motivation.

Coordinate therapy with other treatment personnel. Participate in research and provision of new diagnostic treatment techniques. Administer various types of diagnostic tests measuring hearing disorders, interpret and evaluate test results. Adapt remedial aural rehabilitation techniques to the needs of the DSH-MSH mentally disabled patients, supervise and instruct others in audiological evaluation and treatment techniques to meet the needs of the mentally disabled.

Minimum Requirements:

Possession of a valid license to practice audiology in California as determined by the Speech Pathology and Audiology Examining Committee of the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance. (Includes possession of a Master's Degree in Audiology or deemed equivalent as defined by the Speech Pathology and Audiology Examining Committee.)

(Applicants who are in the process of securing approval of their qualifications by the Speech Pathology and Audiology Examining Committee will be admitted to the examination but they must meet all the legal requirements in order to be eligible for appointment.)

Opened in 1916, DSH-Metropolitan State Hospital is in the vibrant community of Norwalk,15 miles east of Los Angeles. To the south are entertainment venues like Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, the marinas and beaches of Huntington, Newport and Laguna. To the west are Palos Verdes and Marina Del Rey.

DSH-Metropolitan State Hospital has an open campus within a security perimeter. The hospital operates approximately 826 beds.
