The Dallas Morning News currently has an opening for an Audience Journalist. The Audience Journalist will be a key member of the team responsible for introducing our work to new audiences, deepening the relationship we have with the community, as well as maintaining the overall presentation and promotion of dallasnews.com content on our platforms and beyond.
The Audience Journalist is an ambitious digital editor who works with colleagues to determine the best ways to promote our journalism: how, where and when. This person is deeply committed to understanding and engaging current and potential Dallas Morning News readers.
The editor must have strong writing and editing skills, including the versatility to shift voice and tone based on the potential audience. S/he will need a solid understanding of social media, internet culture and the digital space.
This person has experience working in content management systems and social platforms, plus a working knowledge of SEO and digital best practices. The successful candidate will be able to work on tight deadlines and in fast-moving breaking news situations. S/he will have keen news judgment, strong communication skills, the ability to work independently and the capacity to interact productively with fellow employees and all levels of management.
Knowledge of what works in digital headlines and storytelling is important. Duties include creating engaging social media posts, managing the dallasnews.com home page, monitoring real-time analytics and making decisions based on that information, improving and testing headlines, optimizing story pages, pushing news alerts to our readers, aggregating and posting wire content, collaborating with writers and editors on plans for content promotion, and other duties that arise.
Hours for this position will vary, but it will likely include nights and weekends.
Bachelor's degree in journalism preferred.
1-3 years of writing and editing experience. At least one professional internship, preferably in a newsroom.
Strong news judgment.
Working knowledge of content analytics.
Working knowledge of digital best practices, including social media, SEO and newsletters.
Understanding of basic copyright law, and ability to adapt as laws evolve.
