Founded in 1805, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) is America's first school and museum of fine arts. Located in the center city of Philadelphia, PAFA is intimate in scale with a strong sense of community. PAFA offers several nondegree and certificate in studio art and art appreciation programs. POSITION: Atwater Kent Project Museum Educator

The Atwater Kent Project Museum Educator leads and designs custom tours and workshops combining expertise in the exhibitions' content with excellent museum education skills. The Atwater Kent Project Museum Educator leads group tours engaging participants with special exhibitions, explaining their content and historical context and guiding visitors through the journey of discovery and interpretation. Tours are based on inquiry learning and engage visitors with the objects in the exhibitions with emphasis on the development of visual thinking strategies (VTS) and utilization of age-appropriate academic concepts in discussion.

This is a part-time, temporary position at PAFA through December 1, 2024. Individuals selected for this role must be available for exhibition specific training, and at least two weekdays (Monday-Friday, 9:30am-1pm) per work week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Learn the exhibition content to ensure high level expertise in the topics defined by the exhibitions.

  • Develop exhibition-specific tours and activities focusing on visual literacy and 21st century skills.

  • Facilitate gallery tours and activities in the museum, meeting the goals and standards of the museum education.

  • Participate in creation of virtual gallery spotlight talks and enrichment activities as needed.

  • Some programs/events may occur on evenings and weekends.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION - Philadelphia Revealed: UNPACKING THE ATTIC

Philadelphia Revealed, an Exhibition of the Atwater Kent Collection by Drexel University, presented at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, is an exhibition, a podcast, and a platform for anyone to add their story to Philadelphia history. Inspiring pride in our great city, this major exhibition reflects 350 years of Philly history. Through an interactive display of over 600 authentic objects, visitors can find and add their own stories to the archives. They can hear other Philadelphians' stories through The Philadelphia Revealed Podcast, produced by WHYY. Philadelphia history is still being told; Philadelphia Revealed aims to find out what these objects mean to all of us.

Position Requirements

Qualifications:

Preferred qualified candidates should be experts in history, art history, or specific related subjects related to the respective exhibitions. They also must have experience in education or an educational setting, have great public speaking skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to work collaboratively with PAFA community members, children and adults of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Training for VTS and inquiry-based museum learning is provided, specific exhibition content training will also be provided.

  • Bachelor's degree in the visual arts, humanities, education, and/or related areas

  • 2-4 years' experience teaching children/youth (preferably in the classroom or other educational setting)

  • 1-2 years of adult education experience is highly desirable.

  • Art making skills are a plus but not required.

  • Strong communication skills, flexibility and problem-solving skills

  • Experience in teaching on virtual platforms (Zoom, Google Classroom, teams, etc.), familiarity with CANVAS or other virtual Learning Management systems is a plus.

Working with Minors

Background checks, including Child Abuse Clearances and FBI Clearances, are required for all PAFA staff working with minors, as well as the completion of mandatory virtual staff training sessions through Vector Solutions. Applicants with valid Child Abuse History Clearances will have priority. Additional background checks may be required and will be administered by PAFA.
