The NC Department of Justice (NC DOJ) is looking for a leader, strategist, and negotiator to provide excellent representation and support to our Consumer Protection Division within its Technology, Healthcare, and Antitrust Section. This position will be responsible for the most complex and advanced legal problems concerning the economic relationship between consumers and businesses.

This position will formulate strategy on consumer protection matters and managing the implementation of that strategy by mentoring and advising consumer protection staff members.  This work is precedent-setting and critical to the NC DOJ and citizens of our State. Additionally, this Attorney V will effectively develop and communicate to staff methods for navigating complex consumer protection problems, establish legislative and administrative strategies, and conduct civil litigation.

This position will also:

  • Devise and implement strategy, tactics, and negotiation in an inclusive manner.  This must occur with the entire industry group, including banks, insurance companies, automobile manufacturers, drug companies, etc.

  • This position will prepare, file, and litigate cases in trial and appellate courts in areas including but not limited to antitrust, robocalls, telephone solicitation, technology, healthcare, and consumer fraud, where negotiation of appropriate settlement is not possible.

  • Formulate strategy and manage the implementation of that strategy regarding traditional consumer protection matters and arising problems. This position is responsible for analyzing the impacts of the problem, devising legal responses, and then marshaling the human capital and financial resources to respond.

  • Effectively develop and deliver legislative responses to the North Carolina General Assembly and Congress and provide administrative responses before state and federal agencies, including the Federal Trade Commission, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, The Department of Treasury, etc..

  • Work in partnership across the agency to coordinate legislative, legal, and administrative actions with other staff on behalf of the Attorney General's Office.

 Please detail ALL work history including non-state service experience.  If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY or MAY NOT result.

THE STARTING SALARY FOR A NEW HIRE TO THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO THE RECRUITMENT RANGE OF $112,219 to $133,000. Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidate's education and experience related to the position, as well as our agency budget and equity.

Hybrid telework opportunities are available for this position.   Thorough knowledge of federal and state consumer protection case, statutory, regulatory and common law is preferred.

Thorough knowledge of judicial and quasi-judicial procedures and all aspects of administrative law is necessary.

  • interpret and apply laws, constitutional provisions, statutes, administrative regulations and court decisions;
  • analyze facts, evidence, legal instruments; express conclusions and arguments clearly and logically in oral and written form;
  • recognize issues in various cases and creatively develop strategy and tactics in cases;
  • analyze complex legal problems and render formal and informal opinions;
  • and establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach a NGB 23A (RPAS) if you are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.  If you are a former member of the NC National Guard who served for at least 6 years and was discharged under honorable conditions, you must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22.
