The State Ethics Commission collects campaign contribution disclosure reports, personal financial disclosure reports and lobbyist disclosure reports. The Commission serves candidates and elected officials for state and local governments, advises and educates the public on aspects of the Campaign Finance Act, and investigates potential campaign finance violations.

Position Description:

Under close to broad supervision of the supervising attorney, the Attorney is responsible for conducting legal research including researching precedents in cases. Prepares and disseminates complex documents; compiles and prepares subpoenas, pleadings, etc. Develops and modifies forms and procedures. Deliver legal pleadings. Provides analysis and/or recommendations on legal issues within the scope and authority of the agency. Acts as a liaison or representative between the agency and Department of Law. May act as a lead worker and/or supervise support staff.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provides support and assistance to supervising attorney on a variety of legal matters

  • Responds to requests for information and provides answers, opinion, and recommendations regarding legal issues

  • Researches for the staff on all matters affected by applicable laws and regulations and of legal ramification

  • Responds to inquiries regarding legal determinations and disseminates written response or reports to interested parties

  • Review subpoenas, court orders, affidavits, and other legal documents in order to assist staff and supervising attorney

  • Assist in the preparation and coordination of cases prior to and during administrative proceedings, trials and subsequent appeals

  • Assist in legal research; analyze statutes, case law, and other relevant information in aid of the development of case strategies

  • In conjunction with supervising attorney, prepares petitions, briefs, motions and other legal instruments, reports, and correspondence for investigation, discovery and litigation phases

  • Participate in the preparation and coordination of cases prior to and during administrative proceedings and trials

  • Gather information, identify and review facts and issues in the preparation for administrative proceedings and trials

  • Gather documents, prepares exhibits and other necessary items for administrative proceedings and court

  • Prepares legal documents, reports, and statements as required for administrative proceedings and trial

  • Complies with continuing requirements to improve effectiveness. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature as well as attending related and mandatory seminars and/or conferences. Applies pertinent new knowledge to performance and other responsibilities

  • Interacts with all levels of state government in a way that promotes respect, encourages cooperation, and contributions to excellent performance

Skills and Competencies:

  • Knowledge of statutes, court decisions, state and federal laws and regulations and departmental policy

  • Ability to perform research and analysis

  • Ability to draft legal instruments, contracts, proposed legislation, and legal opinions

  • Ability to analyze, appraise and organize facts and present such materials in clear and logical form for oral and written presentation

  • Ability to determine compliance with rules and regulations

Minimum Qualifications:

This position will be filled at a level commensurate with the selectee's education and experience at one of the following levels:

Attorney 1 - LEP020

Pay Grade: K

Salary range: $43,268.09 - $56,868.62

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia OR eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring OR reciprocity (must obtain Law License). Note: Some positions may not allow the eligibility clause.

Attorney 2 - LEP021

Pay Grade: L

Salary range: $47,982.94 - $63,351.55

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia OR eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring OR reciprocity AND One year of relevant legal experience OR One year of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 1 (LEP020).

Attorney 3 - LEP022

Pay Grade: M

Salary range: $53,310.72 - $70,677.24

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia OR eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring OR reciprocity AND Two years of relevant legal experience OR Two years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 2 (LEP021).

Attorney 4 - LEP030

Pay Grade: N

Salary range: $59,331.12 - $78,955.29

Juris Doctorate from an accredited college or university AND license to practice law in the State of Georgia OR eligibility to sit for the next Georgia Bar examination followed by Georgia Bar exam passage and licensure to practice law in the State of Georgia within one (1) year of hiring OR reciprocity AND Three years of relevant legal experience OR Three years of experience required at the lower-level Attorney 3 (LEP022).
