General Summary:

The Athletic Trainer will be responsible for providing preventative measures, acute care, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries to intercollegiate athletes at UMass Boston. The incumbent will be responsible for selected coverage of athletic contest, practices, and Sports Medicine Area as assigned by Head Athletic Trainer. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining the standards for the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).

Examples of Duties:

  • Assist the Head Trainer in providing supervision, direction, and education of student athletic trainers in a clinical setting;

  • Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in the application of principles, methods and procedures of evaluation and treatment of athletic injuries, pre-conditioning and reconditioning of athlete through the use of appropriate preventative and support devices, temporary splinting and bracing, physical modalities of heat, cold, massage, water electric stimulation, sound, exercise and exercise equipment under the direction of a physician;

  • Provide counseling and instruction to coaches, athletes, parents, medical personnel and communities in the area of care and prevention of athletic injuries;

  • Assist in the coordinating and providing medical coverage for home and away contest as well as events as assigned by Head Athletic Trainer;

  • Assist Head Athletic Trainer in the daily sports medicine area activities;

  • Supervise and ensure the physical maintenance of the sports medicine area;

  • Provide and maintain a descriptive inventory of all sports medicine materials, equipment, and supplies;

  • Assist in maintaining computerization of medical records, treatment, educational programs, and supply inventory;

  • Assist in the development of in-service educational programs for student athletic trainers, athletes, coaches, and departmental staff;

  • Assist in establishing and maintaining standards for NATA approved internship per accredited undergraduate student athletic trainer program;

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of one-three years years of experience as a certified athletic trainer is required. Possession of or eligible for the Massachusetts licensure as an Athletic Trainer through the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Allied Health Professions required. NATA certification and maintenance of certification by NATA is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree preferred in Sports Medicine, Physical Therapy or related fields preferred;

  • Prior experience within a college or university setting is preferred.

This position is a full-time, non-tenure track, 9 month faculty appointment beginning as early as July 1, 2019. Faculty at the Lecturer level at Boston University are expected to contribute to teaching within their assigned department and contribute to service in the program, College and to the profession. This position is specifically aligned with the delivery, assessment and promotion of clinical education in the profession of physical therapy. The successful candidate will work closely with the Directors of Clinical Education, to develop and maintain clinical site partnerships, as well as monitor and refine the clinical education component of the curriculum.
